Some G7 leaders plot fightback against Trump on trade at summit

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau meets with the President of the United States Donald J. Trump in the Oval Office

The meeting tomorrow and Saturday in Charlevoix, Quebec, will be the first chance G7 leaders have had to confront Mr Trump in person since U.S. tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Canada, Mexico and the European Union were imposed last week.

"The world economic order is. under attack", Canada's Trade Minister Francois Philippe Champagne commented.

Just days before Trudeau is set to host a G7 Summit in Quebec, Canadian officials tell CNN they are just trying to "keep Trump happy".

His decision also came after NAFTA renegotiation talks turned sour over disagreements on the auto industry and a sunset clause, among other sticking points.

"Japan and the European Union will team up on this issue and call on cooperation from other countries", Japanese Trade Minister Hiroshige Seko told reporters Tuesday.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau walks with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House in Washington, D.C. on Wednesday, Oct. 11, 2017.

"Please tell Prime Minister Trudeau and President Macron that they are charging the US massive tariffs and create non-monetary barriers".

French President Emmanuel Macron, left, and Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard hold a joint news conference in Montreal.

The G7 groups Canada, the United States, Japan, Britain, Italy, France and Germany. The EU also attends.

All the recent comments came amid Clinton's book tour with author James Patterson , who co-authored " The President Is Missing " with the former president.

The news network, attributing its information to sources, said that during a May 25 call, Trudeau questioned how the president could justify new tariffs as a "national security" issue.

"The idea that we are somehow a national security threat to the United States is, quite frankly, insulting and unacceptable", Trudeau told NBC's Meet the Press.

"I will continue to put the argument for the importance of those trade relationships around the world, and I'll be doing that here at the G7 as I have done elsewhere and will continue to do so elsewhere as well", she said.

"Didn't you guys burn down the White House?" he reportedly shot at Trudeau.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel previewed the dynamics on Wednesday, telling the German parliament that "it is apparent that we have a serious problem with multilateral agreements here, and so there will be contentious discussions". "It will start first of all to hurt US workers". Trump said, according to CNN and the CBC.

Canada announced plans to impose reciprocal duties on $12.8 billion worth of USA products. Mr. Seko noted that Japan and the EU had issued a statement critical of the US after he and EU Trade Commissioner Cecillia Malmström met in Paris last week.

Macron expressed support for Trump in his expected summit with the North Korean leader, Kim Jong-un, but also warned that the USA president's abrogation last month of a 2015 multilateral deal on the Iranian nuclear programme, cast doubt on the credibility of such agreements. European allies have urged Trump to reconsider.

The Trump administration has threatened to impose sanctions against European companies that continue to do business with Tehran, an effort the U.S. has said it will resist.
