More than one-third of adults in the US take prescription drugs not knowing they could potentially cause depression or increase the risk of suicide, a new study finds.

A team of researchers from the University of IL made a decision to take a look at prescription drugs and their potentially unknown side effects.

The Chicago researchers analyzed mediation-use patterns of more than 26,000 adults from 2005 to 2014 using data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey.

Thirty-seven percent of Americans may be using these drugs which include hormonal birth control medications, painkillers, blood pressure or heart medications, proton pump inhibitors, antacids, etc.

He also advised people not to stop taking medication out of fear they may develop depression, particularly because so many on the list are used for long-term treatment.

For example, 15 percent who took three or more of these drugs reported depression, compared to 7 percent who took only one drug with ties to the mood disorder, Qato said.

Study author Mark Olson, professor of psychiatry at Columbia University says, "The more of these medications you're taking, the more likely you are to report depression".

Among their results found rising rates of use of common medications and increase rates of polypharmacy. Reported use of three or more concurrent medications with a potential for depression as an adverse effect was estimated at 6.9 percent in 2005 and 2006 and 9.5 percent in 2013 and 2014. Well if you answer a YES to both the questions, then probably your depression might be the side effect of your drug regime.

"People are not only increasingly using these medicines alone, but are increasingly using them simultaneously, yet very few of these drugs have warning labels", said Qato.

Instead, the sound effect used at the music festival "was a pyrotechnic concussion which creates a loud boom", they said in a statement .

Over one-third of adults in the United States are taking prescription medicines which could increase their risk of depression.

To bring down the rate of depression, Qato suggests that the physicians may have to think, consider, and evaluate the role the medications prescribed.

Part of the problem is that "people aren't aware that [these medications] could cause depression", Qato added.

Millions of Americans take some sort of prescription medication each day - and many take two, three or more.

A surprising number of common medications list depression or suicidal thoughts as possible side effects.

And almost 5 percent of USA adults are estimated to have depression symptoms.

By speaking to a doctor about concerning changes, medications can potentially be switched or reduced with the help of lifestyle changes.

The findings reflect statistical adjustments made by the researchers to account for demographic factors known to cause depression, such as poverty, marital status and unemployment, as well as for medical conditions associated with depression, such as chronic pain.
