Thousands Protest At 'Families Belong Together' Marches Nationwide

Crowds took to the streets of United States cities Saturday to demand "Families Belong Together" almost two months after the Trump administration implemented its "zero tolerance" policy toward undocumented immigrants.

After some speeches, the counter-protesters, including a man towing the "Trump Unity Bridge" halted traffic on East Michigan Avenue, leading to more chants and confrontation from protesters.

The crowd then marched down to the federal premises, where they occupied the atrium and several floors, chanting "we care" and "where are the children?" in reference to minors separated from their parents at the US-Mexico border.

Some 2000 children remain separated from their parents, despite President Donald Trump's executive order ending the controversial policy.

The Families Belong Together movement is working towards reuniting the children who were separated from their parents at the border.

"This issue really affects so many families and it's so important, and this administration has really taken it to levels that we just can't stand for, even though it has a longer history in this country", Omeish said. More nationwide rallies are planned for Saturday, June 30, as part of a Families Belong Together event.

"It is abhorrent that we would break families apart with no concrete way to get them back together", she said. Parents and children were detained separately as a result of the process.

Those penalties are expected to reduce the country's hard currency earnings from oil exports, prompting public panic in Iran. Facing potential escalations again, Iranian officials have threatened a crackdown.

But local organisers are shouldering on-the-ground planning, many of them women relying on informal networks established during worldwide women's marches on Mr Trump's inauguration and its anniversary. It was the latest in a string of public protests against Trump administration officials.

Tyler Houlton, a spokesman for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, welcomed interest in the immigration system and said only Congress has the power to change the law. We help our neighbors when they're down.

"To the great and courageous men and women of ICE, do not worry or lose your spirit", Trump tweeted.

Lee Gelernt, deputy director of its Immigrants' Rights Project, said the government has a constitutional obligation to release parents who don't pose a flight risk or danger, and that parents can choose to release their children if they don't want them to be in a family detention center.

Trump did not directly comment on the protests Saturday afternoon, but defended his "zero tolerance" policy in a tweet.

During their sit-in they called for the reunification of families and the dissolution of the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency. On Friday in Los Angeles, however, Justice Department lawyers filed a legal notice arguing that Tuesday's injunction by a federal judge barring the separation of migrant families cancels out the Flores agreement.
