Coast Guard searching for cruise ship worker who fell overboard

A cruise ship worker who went overboard and apparently had to tread water for 22 hours is in a stable condition, a day after being rescued by another passing cruise ship.

Coast Guard officials said the 33-year-old Filipino crew member was seen going overboard on the Norwegian Getaway on Saturday about 28 miles northwest of Pinar del Rio, Cuba. "We are also extremely grateful to Carnival Cruise Line and send our deepest thanks to the crew of Carnival Glory", said a spokesperson for Norwegian Cruise Line in an email. The Miami Herald reported a steward saw the crew member.

'Kudos to the Carnival Glory team for this incredible effort to rescue a fellow seafarer'.

"Both crew and guests threw life rings to the man while we lowered a life boat to retrieve him from the water", he said.

The ship was headed for Miami. The agency says it never suspended the search.

In a statement, Norwegian said the crew member will soon be reunited with friends and family.

But the U.S. Coast Guard continued its search for the crew member.

The Coast Guard said guardsmen rescued Robert Petersen, 66, of St Thomas, US Virgin Islands (USVI).

The Carnival ship had been on its way to Cozumel, Mexico, at the time. The steward notified bridge officers, who quickly started rescue operations, including reducing speed, reversing course and lowering a lifeboat to retrieve the man.

Carnival's Glory left Miami on June 24 for an eight-day cruise that returned to the Florida city on Sunday.

On Sunday, however, he was spotted swimming in the sea by crew aboard a different cruise ship - the Carnival Glory - about 21 miles north of Cuba.
