Ex-Pakistan PM Nawaz Sharif sentenced to 10 years over corruption

A court in Pakistan on Friday sentenced former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to 10 years in jail and his daughter Maryam to seven years in a corruption case, Geo Newsreported.

While Sharif was fined 8 million pounds (USD 10 million), his daughter Maryam was handed down a 2 million pound (USD 2.6 million) fine. Nawaz's son-in-law Captain Safdar was sentenced to one year imprisonment in the case.

Experts believe that it is a very significant political development as general elections in Pakistan will be held this month.

"It is based on injustices".

After the disqualification of Nawaz Sharif as Pakistan's prime minister in the Panama case in July 2017, the NAB, filed three corruption references against the Sharif family.

The National Accountability Bureau court accused Sharif and his family of being unable to legitimately show the money trail for the purchase of several luxury properties in London, mostly in the mid-1990s.

Earlier, sources told Geo News that Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz have made a decision to return to Pakistan immediately following Avenfield reference verdict.

Sharif is now in London, where his wife is receiving medical treatment for cancer.

"We reject this decision", Shahbaz Sharif told a televised press conference in Lahore shortly after the verdict.

His daughter, Maryam Sharif, also received a seven-year sentence, while his former security officer Safdar Awan received a one-year sentence. He denies drawing the monthly salary.

He said that the Sharifs would have been arrested much earlier if the institutions in Pakistan were functioning properly. The PML later split and Nawaz formed the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).

He fell out with powerful generals once he ascended to power a decade later, and relations became fraught after his return as premier in 2013, partly because he challenged the military over foreign policy, which the generals traditionally considered their domain.

Sharif has argued that the military, in cahoots with top members of the judiciary, has used a series of cases against him and others in his party to tip the scales in favour of cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan in the run-up to the election.

Prosecution lawyer Sardar Muzaffar Abbas also said that the court had ordered the properties, in London s exclusive Mayfair, be confiscated by the federal government.

Journalists and activists have spoken of pressure by the military to censor positive coverage of the PML-N campaign amid allegations of a "silent coup".

"A political bigwig has been sentenced to imprisonment for the first time in Pakistan's history", he remarked while talking to media.
