Hispanic Unemployment Reaches Record Low, Media Praise Labor Force Rate

Here comes the jobs report...

Manufacturers added 36,000 jobs last month.

The Labor Department says the unemployment rate rose to 4.0 percent from 3.8 percent as more people began looking for work. "Over the year, average hourly earnings have increased by 72 cents, or 2.7 percent", BLS said on Friday.

The job growth shows the labour market shrugging off worries about a slowdown triggered by trade fights or rising borrowing costs.

The report showed that Canada's trade surplus with the US narrowed to $3.3 billion in May, from $3.7 billion April, as more imports headed north across the border and south-bound exports decreased.

Workers who haven't gone to college accounted for all of this month's net increase in the labor force and employment.

Arriving on the ninth anniversary of the recession's end, the latest jobs numbers cap a string of encouraging economic reports.

Tom Carper, the top Democrat on the Environment and Public Works Committee, said Pruitt made the EPA "a punchline". Wednesday night, Pruitt was on the White House lawn, watching fireworks explode over the Washington sky.

The broader USA economy appears sturdy.

Gross domestic product estimates for the April-June period are above a 4 per cent annualized rate, double the 2.0 per cent pace logged in the first quarter.

The labor force participation rate also went up by 0.2 percent to the current 62.9 percent after 601,000 joined the civilian labor force. But retailers cut 21,600 jobs last month, after boosting payrolls by 25,100 in May.

"Let's remember that for some time, the unemployment rate has been below the level typically associated with 'full employment, ' but the relatively robust level of hiring being seen suggests there's more room" for the jobless rate to drop, he added.

Yet the tax cuts have done little to generate substantial pay growth. Any escalation in the conflict with China could disrupt hiring as companies grapple with higher import prices and diminished demand for their exports.

The Trump administration has also applied tariffs on steel and aluminum from allies like Canada and Mexico and has threatened to abandon the North American Free Trade Agreement with those two countries. Restaurants added 16,400 jobs in June, under the average of 18,400 over the year.
