Hundreds Of Cancer Lawsuits Against Monsanto Proceed To Trials

US courts to hear cases that weed-killer sold in UK causes cancer

Claims against Monsanto received a boost in 2015, when the International Agency for Research on Cancer - part of the World Health Organization - announced that two pesticides, including glyphosate, are "probably carcinogenic to humans".

A federal judge in Sacramento in February blocked California from requiring that Roundup carry a label stating that it is known to cause cancer, saying the warning is misleading because nearly all regulators have concluded that there is no evidence glyphosate is carcinogenic.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency concluded in September 2017 that the chemical is likely "not" carcinogenic to humans, provided it was used in accordance with label directions.

"Throughout much of this case, the plaintiffs seem to have operated under the assumption that they can clear the general causation hurdle simply by showing that IARC's decision to designate glyphosate a probable human carcinogen is scientifically sound", he said.

The first case to be heard is that of a former school groundskeeper, Dewayne Johnson, of whom doctors said is already dying of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in just a matter of years. The report noted that science reviews by numerous other countries had reached the same conclusion.

Super-Mom Serena into 10th Wimbledon final
She won the grass-court tournament the last two times she played it, in 2015 and 2016, before missing it past year while pregnant. The first of the two matches on Centre Court seemed to hold more promise given the contrasting styles of the two players.

She said: 'It's time to hold Monsanto accountable for putting this risky product on the market'. It has since been sold in more than 160 countries.

The plaintiffs will now have to show Roundup caused cancer in individual people whose cases will be selected for test trials, a phase Chhabria called a "daunting challenge". Farmers in California have been using the weed killer on more than 200 types of crops.

Johnson sprayed Roundup and a similar product, Ranger Pro, at his job as a pest control manager at a San Francisco Bay Area school district, according to his attorneys. In one incident, the hose attached to the tank got broken and the herbicide soaked Johnson's entire body.

In 2014, Johnson was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, a cancer that affects white blood cells.

However, Monsanto said there's no evidence of a connection between their product and cancer. He was never warned that the weed killer was harmful. The Johnson case is taking place on its own because attorneys feared he would die before the proceedings could begin.
