Bus companies look at options following Greyhound decision

Greyhound Canada is cancelling all but one route in Western Canada

Greyhound announced earlier this week that it is ending the majority of its passenger service in Western Canada by the end of October.

Without Greyhound, fleeing domestic violence will be all but impossible for a lot of women, she warned.

Cassidy said people in the Maritimes saw an end to bus services six years ago after an global company there dropped its routes, but Maritime Bus picked up the slack within weeks.

"There certainly is a shock right now, but this is something that Greyhound has been communicating for the last year, for the last five years, that we can no longer sustain any type of viable business within the province, within these regions".

"This move will leave people with limited options to get around and this will likely impact the most vulnerable", said Trevena. That, and increased costs, have created "an ongoing spiral", Greyhound said.

He also urged Trudeau to listen to those anxious about safety, citing the notorious stretch of B.C. highway known as the Highway of Tears, a region where many Indigenous women have gone missing.

The cancellations are scheduled to take effect October 31. And she plans to meet her provincial counterparts from Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba to share ideas for replacing the bus service.

"I can't give a good estimate of how big the impact will be, but we're going to hear more once people start realizing there is no service any more".

Trump piled on Brexit pressure on May, says former PM's adviser
Trump also said, "The deal she is striking is a much different deal than the one the people voted on". May must publicly respond to Trump's comments when the pair hold a press conference later on Friday.

James Anderson, a spokesman for FedEx Canada, wouldn't comment on the Greyhound service, but said his firm is well able to handle delivery demand with a total of 38 hubs or facilities throughout Western Canada.

He said tickets for the new routes would be in the $90 to $125 range.

Passengers place their luggage on a Greyhound bus before departing from Vancouver, on Monday.

Alberta's Transportation Minister Brian Mason said Monday that Greyhound's decision is an issue of "national importance".

She continued, "in the weeks and months ahead, I will be sitting down with other service providers, the private sector and local government to discuss how we can ensure people have access to safe, reliable and affordable transportation to get from one community to the next. At no point did Greyhound reach out to me, or my staff, to have a conversation on solutions to keep people connected - something I would have expected, given their long history in this province".

Alternative methods of transportation exist, but few are as economical and convenient as Greyhound.

Greyhound's freight service cost less than most, but its schedule was also usually less convenient as it depended on the passenger bus schedule, Butler said.

"As the northernmost major Canadian city and a hub for an bad lot of important things that happen in Western Canada, it's concerning", Edmonton Mayor Don Iveson told reporters just after hearing the news on Monday.
