Putin summit: Russian leader attacks USA critics of summit

Trump critics have a new word in their vocabulary treason

Putin said he would permit the 12 to be questioned inside Russia if the United States allowed Russia to question former US envoy to Russia Michael McFaul and 11 others in Moscow's case against billionaire investor and human rights activist William Browder, the driving force behind Magnitsky Act sanctions on Russian officials passed by the US Congress.

"Say that again", national intelligence director Dan Coats responded, when informed of the invitation during an appearance at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado.

The ministry also said it was preparing to conduct flight tests of a new nuclear-powered cruise missile, the Burevestnik or Storm Petrel.

Putin's comments come as Trump still faces condemnation on both sides of the political aisle after his fawning press conference in Helsinki with the Russian leader.

Top Senate Democrat Chuck Schumer immediately criticized the planned invitation.

Antonov gave details of their discussions on arms control, but said the US has been reluctant to back Russia's proposals so far.

The last official visit by a Russian president to the United States was in June 2010, when Dmitri Medvedev, now Russian prime minister, visited the United States.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., introduced a non-binding resolution Thursday that says that the US should refuse to make any former diplomat available to Russian investigators who say that official may have interfered in their country's domestic affairs.

"White House aides are anxious Trump will interpret Coats' comments as a personal act of betrayal, coming so soon after the president's praise for him", the Post reports. "President Trump was very clear we're not going to force Americans to go to Russia to be interrogated by the Russians", he said.

Trudeau blasts Putin, Russia following Finland summit but stays mum on Trump
Topics discussed included Syria, which Trump highlighted as an important area of possible cooperation in conjunction with Israel. As such, his extraordinary performance on Monday fueled criticism of his presidency from both the right and left.

Trump on Tuesday said he misspoke during the news conference.

While Trump originally called the idea an "incredible offer", and continued to weigh it through Wednesday, White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders said he has now decided against it. And as the days pass and Trump's comments about Monday's summit become more and more contradictory, Moscow appears to be quietly losing hope for a thaw in Russian-U.S. ties under Trump.

Trump, who has struggled to quiet a political uproar over his failure at Monday's summit in Helsinki to confront Putin over Russia's meddling in the 2016 USA election, renewed his fierce criticism of one of his favourite targets, the news media.

So Coats' statement that Trump made a mistake at the Helsinki summit - which even the president has acknowledged - might not be enough to draw the president's ire.

"This body must reaffirm that we stand with the men and women of the Department of Justice, who have brought these 12 indictments against individuals from the Russian Federation who interfered with our elections", Flake said in a statement.

On Wednesday, the Russian Prosecutor General's office listed Americans it wanted to question for "illegal activities", including Michael McFaul, who was US ambassador to Russia under Democratic former President Barack Obama. I have President Putin he just said it's not Russian Federation.

"The Fake News Media wants so badly to see a major confrontation with Russian Federation, even a confrontation that could lead to war", Trump tweeted. The invitation was announced hours after the president tweeted that he looked forward to "our second meeting" as he defended his performance Monday at the summit in which the two leaders conferred on a range of issues, including terrorism, Israeli security, nuclear proliferation and North Korea.
