New U.S. Russia sanctions push slows in Congress before recess

В Сенате США анонсирован законопроект об ужесточении санкций против России

The issue of election meddling hung over last week's summit in Helsinki, with Trump during a news conference giving credence to Putin's denials of Russian interference despite the findings of the USA intelligence community. During a press conference at the summit, Trump called Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling a "disaster". Instead of saying he didn't see any reason why Russian Federation "would" be involved in the election, Trump said, he meant to say he didn't see any reason why it "wouldn't" have meddled in the process.

Most recently, Trump said on Tuesday that not only does he accept that foreign interference is taking place, he fears that this year, Russian Federation will direct its energies in support of Democrats who want to claim majorities in the House and Senate.

"Just as Vladimir Putin has made clear his intention to challenge American power, influence, and security interests at home and overseas, the United States must make it abundantly clear that we will defend our nation and not waver in our rejection of his effort to erode western democracy as a strategic imperative for Russia's future", they added, referring to the Russian president. "They definitely don't want Trump!"

"We hope that will create momentum in the coming days and we'll be joined by more colleagues from both parties who will support this important initiative", - said in a statement, the senators.

Outside analysts have opined that if Putin and his government simply want chaos or deadlock in the United States, they might shift their efforts in 2018 toward helping Democrats take control of Congress.

Under pressure from Congress, which a year ago passed a tough sanctions law targeting Russia, the US Treasury in April imposed sanctions on Russian officials and oligarchs for election meddling and "malign" activities. "That is something we reserve for allies".

Talking to Putin about matters such as the civil war in Syria, Gowdy said, "is very different from issuing an invitation".

"In my opinion, there is no doubt that they intervened and will intervene (in elections) in the future", said Rubio. "I think President Putin knows that better than anyone, certainly a lot better than the media". A committee of the US Congress last night (early this morning in India) okayed a country-specific waiver for India to escape punitive sanctions over its military deals with Russian Federation.

"The speaker and I have made it clear that Putin will not be welcome here at the Capitol", Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky told reporters Tuesday.

The Senate Banking Committee will convene a classified Members briefing with Administration officials to discuss Russian Federation and the impact of sanctions.

Russian Federation has denied election interference.

Corker is pushing for sanctions against the 12 Russian intelligence officials who hacked into Democratic National Committee computers during the 2016 presidential election.
