Google launches free Wi-Fi hotspot network in Nigeria

Osinbajo

Google said on Thursday that it has partnered with Nigerian fibre cable network provider 21st Century to provide its public Wi-Fi service. "Sites will include markets, transport hubs, shopping malls, universities and more".

"Many internet users in Africa don't have Wi-Fi in their homes, relying instead on the few public Wi-Fi hotspots to connect, communicate and learn".

Google's WiFi project that aims to bring wireless connectivity across all developing countries is now launching in Nigeria. Similar services have been launched in India, Indonesia, Mexico and Thailand. Later this year, Google will also make it possible to watch all the saved videos on YouTube Go in the user's Gallery app on the smartphone.

We will have to wait and see if Google will achieve their goals of serving millions of Nigerians with free internet, but for now the promise on saving data seems to have gotten many people excited.

Google says that it will have 200 locations equipped in Lagos and four other major cities - we presume the capital of Abuja would be included - by 2020.

The longest lunar eclipse of the 21st century is coming on Friday
East coast viewers will see the blood moon at its fullest at about 5.30am, with the Earth, moon and sun in flawless alignment. Although Mars is visible in the night sky all year round, it will be extremely bright on July 27.

Additionally, Google announced the update of several products from its "Go" initiative, which were launched in the past year.

Osinbajo recalled that a digital skills training programme was launched in 2016, aimed at training of 400,000 youths on basic digital skills, adding that the government had since trained more than one million persons in partnership with Google and local digital firms. Google reported the twelve startups that graduated the program to have directly created 132 jobs between them and raise funds over $7 million (approximately Rs 48 crore).

Across Africa, Transsion, Nokia, Huawei, and Mobicel have launched various devices, starting at just over 17,000 Naira. The company is now in the process of selecting 36 nonprofit and social enterprise innovators who have the best uses of technology to tackle Africa's biggest challenges.

While more people increasingly have access to the internet in Africa, a lot of work still needs to be done to break certain limitations.
