Teen suffers severe burns from "Hot Water Challenge"

Indiana family warns of dangers of 'Hot Water Challenge'

An Indianapolis, Indiana teen, 15-year-old Kyland Clark, is speaking out on the dangers of a social media challenge because he received severe burns after unwittingly participating in one.

The "challenge", which made national headlines past year and has been circulating online since at least 2014, consists of someone either drinking boiling water through a straw, or having the water poured on them.

Last week, Kyland Clark and his friends looked up the challenge on YouTube. Clark's friend then chose to prank him, and poured hot water on him while he was sleeping.

"I looked down at my chest", he said.

Kyland Clark, 15, said his skin "fell off" his chest and face, the news station reported.

Battlefield 5's Grand Operations mode will be playable at launch after all
It is a massive multiplayer mode that will be very narrative-heavy so we believe it will be one hell of an experience. Here's hoping that Grand Operations does in fact arrive " shortly after launch ".

He suffered second degree burns on his back, chest and face.

Local doctors told WXIN they are starting to see more and more of these internet challenges sending people to the hospital. Kyland has been in the hospital for a week receiving treatment for his injuries.

"There's a limit to what you should do in a challenge and what you shouldn't", the teen said.

If hot coffee or tea can cause an injury, imagine what boiling water can do, according to the Burn Foundation.

"To see my baby, all burned up like that, it was heart breaking", his mother Andrea said. "And, it's suggesting to people that they can try it and they won't be hurt, but they will be". Kyland Clark, 15, is still wearing the scars of a risky internet challenge gone wrong. Also last summer, an 8-year-old girl suffered fatal throat injuries after she tried to drink boiling water through a straw, Fox News reported. Dr. Ed Bartkus, of IU Health in Indianapolis, told FOX 59 that participants and victims could suffer permanent disfigurement, or die from burns to their airway. Thoughts echoed by Kyland and Andrea Clark, who say, for now, they're just glad Kyland is on the road to recovery. Doctors hope that the pigment will return to his face in several months.
