Iran's Zarif Says China 'Pivotal' to Salvaging Nuclear Deal, China Agrees

US begins reimposing trade and finance sanctions against Iran following Iran deal withdrawal

Trump announced in early May the unilateral withdrawal of the United States from the Iran nuclear deal and the reinstatement of sanctions against the country, as well as against foreign companies who do business with it.

Senior Iranian officials have warned the country would not easily yield to a renewed USA campaign to strangle Iran's vital oil exports.

The U.S. has been pushing its allies to halt their import of Iranian oil ahead of the November deadline.

Sporadic protests broke out in several cities in Iran for a fifth night on Saturday, a day after demonstrators attacked a seminary, according to Iranian news agencies and social media, as Iranians brace for a return of U.S. sanctions.

She told CNBC with regards to the USA sanctions against Iran kicking in next week, "we're looking at tougher rhetoric and potentially tougher actions over August and September".

Trump made that much known in a Twitter post days ago during a joint White House news conference with Italian Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte.

The snub could seriously undermine United States efforts to isolate Iran over the country's controversial nuclear programme.

According to data compiled by the agency, China boosted its purchases of Iranian oil in July, snapping up more than a third of the country's total exports.

Tehran had offered nearly free shipping and an extended credit period for oil sales to India, its top oil client after China.

The Trump administration argued that the nuclear deal, which lifted some economic sanctions in exchange for restrictions on Tehran's nuclear program, was fatally flawed because it didn't address the country's destabilizing behavior or limit its development of ballistic missiles, among other things.

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has warned the US against any attempt to stop Tehran's oil trade, threatening to block the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

The U.S. has been unable to persuade China to cut Iranian oil imports, according to two officials familiar with the negotiations, dealing a blow to President Donald Trump's efforts to isolate the Islamic Republic after his withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear accord.

"The unilateral sanctions should be abandoned because they are counterproductive", Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying told reporters.

"China will continue to cooperate with Iran adhering to its global obligations".

Remaining sanctions ncluding on Iran's oil and gas sector and central bank will resume on November 5.

State refiners accounted for about four-fifths of the imports; Indian Oil Corp along with its unit Chennai Petroleum Corp imported approximately 300 000 bpd oil, the preliminary data showed.
