Mass protest in Tel Aviv against new nationality law

Event held with both the UK and Ethiopian Jewish community community

Tens of thousands of people gathered in Tel Aviv on Saturday to protest against Israel's new law declaring it the nation-state of the Jewish people, which has provoked outrage among the country's most integrated minority, the Druze.

Minorities and many Jewish Israelis alike have criticized the law, adopted last month, for recognizing Israel as a Jewish state and saying "the right to exercise national self-determination in the State of Israel is unique to the Jewish people". Arabic, previously considered an official language, was granted only special status.

Haaretz stated that "the plan outlines a Basic Law and a regular law that will recognise the contribution of minorities who defend the country by "enshrining eligibility for the benefits of minority members of all religions and communities who serve in the security forces, for the objective of closing gaps and promoting social equality". I want to tell them: "There is nothing in this law that infringes on your rights as equal citizens of the state of Israel, and there is nothing in it that harms the special status of the Druze community in Israel", Netanyahu said on Sunday.

"Despite our unlimited loyalty to the state, the state doesn't consider us equals", Israeli Druze spiritual leader Sheikh Muafak Tarif said in a speech. They support the state of Israel, are active in parliament and, crucially, serve in the Israeli army.

"Just as we fight for the existence and security of the state so we are determined to fight together for the character and right to live in it in equality and dignity", said Tarif.

Denmark ban on burqa goes into effect
Human rights advocates have decried the law, claiming such a blanket ban is neither necessary nor proportionate. Justice Minister Soren Pape Poulsen said earlier this year it was also a matter of Danish values.

Dozens of protesters erected a huge sign blaring the words "Crime Minister" and bearing an image of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Critics and members of the state's Palestinian minority - which constitutes 20 percent of Israel - have likened the law to apartheid. According to Israeli media, Netanyahu abruptly ended a meeting with Druze officials this week and lawmaker Avi Dichter, a co-sponsor of the law, was heckled by Druze in attendance at another.

Several Druze military officers recently said they would stop serving in response to it, sparking fears of widespread insubordination.

Arabs have strongly criticised the legislation, particularly those from Israel's 130,000-strong Druze community. Israel is a Jewish and democratic state.

Israeli Druze leaders say their alliance with Jews dates back long before they helped them win independence in 1948. "From this rally, with joint hands and hearts, we go forward for many more years of joint life in Israel in the spirit of the Declaration of Independence".
