Woods targets low score on moving day at Firestone

Woods hit only one fairway over the second half of his round

Day battled mistakes during the third round at the hard Firestone Country Club but managed to stay near the top of the leaderboard at 10-under-par after a one-under 69 on Saturday.

A good par save at the mammoth par-four ninth saw him make the turn two under for the day, only for a poor wedge shot over the 10th green to leave him with an nearly impossible shot, leading to a bogey.

"It was very similar to the first day, " Woods said.

"(Sunday) is a different story", a defiant Day said.

His finish began with a tee shot on the 17th hole that landed closer to the 16th fairway.

Marc Leishman carded a 67 to sit a shot back of fellow Australian Day, in a tie for fifth, and is also confident of making a final-round charge. McIlroy and Thomas live in South Florida, practice at The Bear's Club that Jack Nicklaus built, and spent several days practicing last week.

"The course is going to be tougher and totally different to the previous three rounds and it's going to feel like a major".

Tiger Woods returned to Firestone and had his lowest opening round of the year at the Bridgestone Invitational. "The golf course is playing very soft, very receptive". Though any struggling hasn't been apparent, yet.

"On the other hand, if your game's a little bit off and you're missing fairways you can make a few bogeys out there".

"I didn't hit the ball as clean as I wanted to, " he said.

She was at 13 under overall, one stroke ahead of playing partner Georgina Hall of England, whose scrambling through an erratic round kept her in contention for her first major.

"Three out of four (WGC titles) would be wonderful".

Poulter picked up shots on the third, eighth and 11th before dropping his first shot of the week on the 12th.

Woods might not be in the kind of pain that he suffered through the past few years prior to spinal fusion surgery in April 2017 - or any pain at all - but he was clearly having some timing and speed issues.

"I think it was pretty good", said the Englishman.

Thomas finished on 15 under after a one-under 69 on the final day.

"Now it's become a bigger event, but unfortunately we have to move on".

Now Woods heads to the final major of the year and his last shot at a 15th title until next April's Masters with one of his most freakish performances of the year to call on. He has committed to the first two tournaments and is all but a lock for the third, meaning a lot of golf for him over the next month.

From 212 yards on No. 18, he missed shooting 59 by inches. "To me, that's not as frustrating as what I was doing yesterday - just hitting bad putts". The ball barely scooted by on the right, leaving an 8-foot putt for eagle.
