Russia names action-movie star Seagal as envoy for US

Actor Steven Seagal attends the SMASH Global V pre Oscar fight at Taglyan Complex in Los Angeles California

Russia appointed actor Steven Seagal as a "special representative" on US-Russian humanitarian ties, the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in statement on its official Facebook page Saturday.

The statement reads that Seagal's portfolio in the unpaid position would be to 'facilitate relations between Russian Federation and the United States in the humanitarian field, including cooperation in culture, arts, public and youth exchanges'. The American actor was granted Russian citizenship in 2016 and is said to enjoy a friendly relationship with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, things have really only gotten worse since then. He told Piers Morgan on the British ITV network's "Good Morning Britain" previous year, "For anyone to think that Vladimir Putin had anything to do with fixing the elections, or even that the Russians have that kind of technology, is stupid". While that may seem, let's say, confusing, it's not a complete shock if you've kept track of Seagal and his russophilia in the last few years.

He is also one of the Hollywood stars accused by several women of sexual misconduct in the wake of the #MeToo campaign, which he has denied. The ministry explained that the position is public and is not expected to be paid. The countries have also been at odds over the Syrian civil war and the Russian annexation of Crimea.

United Kingdom hikes interest rates for second time in a decade
The governor said trade skirmishes have "evolved into tariff wars and now we're possibly at the beginning of currency wars". This means marginally higher interest earnings for customers opening fixed deposits with banks.

Seagal thanked the Russian government for his new role, describing the appointment as "a great honor".

The Russian foreign ministry likened Seagal's new role to that of United Nations goodwill ambassadors, prominent individuals who volunteer to highlight important areas of the U.N.'s work. "I take this honour very seriously", he added.

President Donald Trump has been criticized for his reluctance to speak out against Russian Federation or President Vladimir Putin, and the addition to Steven Seagal into the mix isn't going to help matters.
