Mossad accused of killing top Syrian rocket scientist

The Israeli intelligence agency Mossad has been accused of killing a top research director at a military agency linked to Syria’s chemical weapons program

He was killed by a vehicle bomb Saturday night in Masyaf, and Syria was quick to allege Israel's spy agency, Mossad, was behind it.

Israel has denied any involvement in Asbar's death, though Intelligence and Transportation Minister Yisrael Katz said he "welcomed" the news.

Israel has not commented on the assassination. Separate western reports have also indicated Iranian missile operation at the site. NYT spelled it as Absar, the Israeli newspaper called him Abzar while Syrian official agency described him as Isber. Israel has carried out more than 100 airstrikes against targets in Syria since 2012 aimed either at Iranian military facilities or at attempts to transfer sophisticated weapons to the Iranian-backed Hezbollah militia in Lebanon.

In this photo released by the Syrian official news agency SANA, shows the damage of the Syrian Scientific Research Center which was attacked by the US, Britain and France, in Barzeh, near Damascus, Syria.

The nursing home alerted police after the men were discovered to be missing from the home. Police had to escort them back to the nursing home with a taxi and a patrol vehicle .

The Syrian Scientific Research Centre has always been a focus of global efforts to curtail Syria's capacity to develop weapons of mass destruction, including chemical and biological weapons. The blast also killed his personal driver.

The source said Asbar was a target because Israeli intelligence believed he headed Sector 4, a secret unit at the Syrian Scientific Studies and Research Center (SSRC).

It is also said that the brigade of special goal Abu Amara, who has previously attacked the facilities under the control of Assad, said in a Telegram that it had set and detonated the explosive devices to kill Asbera.

The Iranian presence in Syria - increasingly spreading south towards the Golan Heights - is one of Israel's greatest concerns, as it fears that after the conflict winds down, fighters will turn their energy to Israel. Although no shots have been fired since the 1974 ceasefire, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad continues to press for the return of the territory.
