No alcohol safe to drink - global study confirms

Globally one in three people drink alcohol – equivalent to 2.4 billion people

The research also said that the "myth of the drunk Irish man" is inaccurate. The researchers from the University of Washington say alcohol leads to 2.8 million deaths a year, and it is the leading risk factor for premature mortality and disability in the 15 to 49 age group, accounting for a whopping 20% of deaths.

"Although the health risks associated with alcohol start off being small with one drink a day, they then rise rapidly as people drink more". The authors also used updated and more robust statistical review models to analyze alcohol consumption and the health problems associated with it. The report urges governments to revise health guidelines to suggest lower levels of consumption.

What's more, any protective health effects of alcohol were offset by the drink's risk, including strong links between alcohol consumption and the risk of cancer and injuries such as auto accidents.

"But at the global level, that additional risk of 0.5 percent among (once-a-day) drinkers corresponds to about 100,000 additional deaths each year", said senior author Emmanuela Gakidou, a professor at the University of Washington and a director at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation.

The study included data on individual and population alcohol consumption from nearly 700 sources, in addition to nearly 600 studies on the risk of alcohol use. In the research, a standard alcoholic drink was defined as 10g alcohol.

"We now understand that alcohol is one of the major causes of death in the world today", Richard Horton, editor of The Lancet, said in the statement. Although they didn't make the top 10, 85.3% of men and 81.3% of women in the United Kingdom said they had tippled in the previous 12 months.

For people aged 50 and older, cancers were a leading cause of alcohol related death, constituting 27.1 per cent of deaths in women and 18.9 per cent deaths in men.

The study says just one drink a day can slightly increase the chances of contracting 23 alcohol-related health problems.

EXPLAINED: Why reunions of war-split Korean families are high on emotion
Before this week's reunions, about 23 500 Koreans attended reunions, some 19 800 in person and the others by video, since 2000. The relatives have been given a total of 12 hours together, including three hours in private.

Going teetotal is the only way to avoid risking health with alcohol, scientists have claimed.

Any protection against heart disease, stroke and diabetes offered by alcohol turned out to be "not statistically significant", said the researchers.

Globally, one in three people drink alcohol - equivalent to 2.4 billion people.

There are drinkers who don't care for their health and there are those who drink and argue that moderate alcohol consumption is healthy. "The solutions are straightforward: Increasing taxation creates income for hard-pressed health ministries, and reducing the exposure of children to alcohol marketing has no downsides".

"I can't see negatives associated with no drinking".

While some medical studies - and a great deal of media attention - have focused on possible health benefits of drinking alcohol in moderation, a large new report warns that the harms of alcohol greatly outweigh any potential beneficial effects.

The highest average amounts of daily drinks for men were in Romania (8.2 units), Portugal and Luxembourg (7.2 units), and Lithuania and Ukraine (7 units).

A lot of them relied on self-reported information, which means people have to remember their drinking habits accurately, which means the data might be flawed or inaccurate, according to CBS.
