British PM says no-deal Brexit would not be a disaster

Britain's Prime Minister Theresa May

May said that wars and state-based conflicts had declined but have been replaced by new threats, noting that terrorists had killed around 20,000 people in Africa in the past five years.

"I suspect my dancing this morning might not quite make it onto Strictly", she told ITV News.

That earned her criticism from Britain's populist UKIP party, which said in a statement that she endorses "racist land reform".

"Theresa May dancing is me dancing unwillingly at parties so I refuse to criticise her", said journalist Stig Abell.

Explaining her presence in Africa, she said: "This week I am visiting three countries, South Africa, Nigeria and Kenya, that I regard as key partners in achieving this goal".

The Prime Minister was attending a reception at the ID MKize Senior Secondary school in Gugulethu, Cape Town where she was met by pupils singing and waving British flags.

"This means that there are many British business leaders who have a good understanding of the South African market and recognise its potential, and who are also able to identify constraints to growth and development".

When May meets with Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday, he will be fresh back from meeting US President Trump in Washington.

May, scheduled to visit Nigeria on Wednesday, added that Africa has the highest number of poor people in the world, with Nigeria being the poorest.

The UK IS planning an outlay of £8 billion (R146.36bn) in Africa in the next four years and South Africa has set its sights on being the biggest beneficiary of the investments.

At the press conference, May also voiced support for South Africa's controversial land reform plans.

"The UK has for some time now supported land reform ... land reform that is legal, transparent", she said, adding that she welcomed assurances already given by South African leader Cyril Ramaphosa that there would be "no smash and grab".
