'Cosby' actor Geoffrey Owens thankful for support about Trader Joe's job

Actors and fans defend ‘Cosby Show’ actor after articles job-shame him for working at Trader Joe’s

Support is pouring in for Owens, including from Gabrielle Carteris, the president of the actors union SAG-AFTRA. But because of the instant and worldwide response, "the shame part didn't last very long". Many people were seemingly very upset, while others seemed to be mocking Owens for having to take such a menial job.

Owens played Elvin Tibideaux, the son-in-law of Bill Cosby's character, during the final five seasons of The Cosby Show which aired between 1985 and 1992. The performer, who has recently appeared on shows like Lucifer, The Affair, and Divorce, addressed the response to his grocery-store gig during an appearance on Good Morning America Tuesday morning. "This businesses of my being the Cosby guy who got shamed for working at Trader Joe's, that's going to pass".

"You're shaming a black man for doing a job, providing for his family, providing for himself", said Kearny resident Samantha Cordova. It might pay better, it might have better benefits, it might look better on a resume and on paper. "But actually, it's not better". Every job is worthwhile and valuable.

Regardless of where he ends up - whether he stays at Trader Joe's or finds new opportunities in Hollywood - Owens said he doesn't want anyone to feel bad for him or pity him because he's "had a great life" and "a great career".

He appeared in the season opener before dropping out of the rotation and eventually spending long stretches away from the Lakers. The Lakers gave up guard D'Angelo Russell in a trade with Brooklyn last summer because they could include Mozgov's contract.

Owens was not working Monday, but customers CBS2's Rozner spoke with said he's regularly here and a lot of them had no idea he was an actor. No one has to feel sorry for me.

Owens' story touched scores of people and Twitter was lit up with messages of support for the veteran actor, including some from celebrities. "But the period of devastation was so short", he said, describing the messages of support he had received from all over the world. And when there wasn't work in his field he took other jobs, including bagging groceries, that kept his schedule free so he could go on auditions and keep looking for work. He wanted a job with enough flexibility to allow him to continue working in the entertainment business, as well. "I want to get a job because I'm in the right person for it".

The former "Cosby Show" actor said that at first he was "really devastated" at the articles, which many perceived as attempts to job-shame him.

While Owens said the incident has sparked interest in him for future acting gigs, he maintained that he would only be interested in pursuing opportunities he earned on merit alone. "Much respect to you Sir!"
