Chicago Officer Jason Van Dyke Found Guilty in Murder of LaQuan McDonald

Laquan McDonald: Verdict reached in Chicago police shooting

Jurors convicted white Chicago police Officer Jason Van Dyke for murder and aggravated battery in the slaying Laquan McDonald, the black teenager who was shot 16 times as he walked away carrying a knife on October 20, 2014. Van Dyke said he fired in self-defense after McDonald lunged at him with a knife.

Activists in downtown Chicago after Jason Van Dyke was found guilty for second-degree murder.

Shortly after noon, word spread across the city that the racially charged trial of Chicago Police Officer Jason Van Dyke had almost reached its end.

Van Dyke, who is white, had faced two counts of first-degree murder, 16 counts of aggravated battery, and one count of official misconduct in the shooting of McDonald, who is black.

Van Dyke was also convicted of 16 counts of aggravated battery - one for each bullet - and acquitted of official misconduct.

Judge Vincent Gaughan revoked bail and ordered Van Dyke taken into custody to await sentencing later this month. Second-degree murder typically carries a sentence of less than 20 years, especially for someone with no criminal history.

Van Dyke made similar claims on the witness stand as he told jurors that he was afraid for his life and acted according to his training. "At any step during that 20-minute rampage - if Laquan McDonald had dropped that knife - he would have been here today".

He was the first Chicago officer to be charged with first-degree murder since 1980.

Those prosecutions are a fraction of the estimated 1,000 annual police killings, according to Mr. Stinson. Police said he had slashed a tyre on a patrol auto, resulting in a stand-off between the teenager and officers. Dan Herbert, Van Dyke's defense attorney, suggested that police officers will look at the trial and hesitate to fire their weapons in potentially risky situations, saying: "It is a sad day for law enforcement". One of the only instances was during opening statements, when special prosecutor Joseph McMahon told the jurors that Van Dyke didn't know anything about McDonald's past when he encountered him that night.

What happened at the trial?

He says some students at his daughter's high school were "walking around asking, 'Which one is Jason Van Dyke's daughter because we are going to get her?"

Law Enforcement Officer Reported Dead, 4 Others Injured in South Carolina Shooting
Hopkins is now still at the hospital, and reportedly has a head injury and isn't able to speak to officers. The TV station also cited Kirby as saying a 20-year-old man who was shot inside a house was still alive.

"[His] eyes were bugging out".

Prosecutors argued that McDonald's death was not justified and accused Van Dyke of "exaggerating the threat". I could see the pain in these people.

"It wasn't the knife in Laquan's hand that made the defendant kill him that night".

Pastor Gregory Livingston told FOX 32 watching Van Dyke's trial has riled up the community, but that he and other leaders hope any demonstrations will be peaceful.

He had been charged with first degree-murder, a charge that requires a finding that the shooting was unnecessary and unreasonable.

The officer told jurors he then shot McDonald.

After the footage was released in November 2015, Emanuel ousted his police superintendent, Garry McCarthy, who later said he was a fall guy and is now running for mayor.

The long-delayed footage resulted in mass protests, culminating with the dismissal of the police chief and a Department of Justice investigation into the Chicago Police Department's use of force and practices.

The Justice Department launched an investigation, concluding in a scathing report past year that the department violates the constitutional rights of residents.

Correction: Earlier versions of this story incorrectly stated that Van Dyke was handcuffed as he was led from the courtroom. In addition, the presiding judge had reportedly filled the courtrooom with sheriffs to contain any outbursts when the verdict was announced. A Chicago kid, Herbert got out of college and followed his father into the Police Department before he got his law degree and joined the Cook County state's attorney's office.

Police have been put on 12-hour shifts to bolster available numbers by up to 4,000 officers.
