US Secretary of State Pompeo to meet North Korea's Kim Jong-un

This will be Pompeo's fourth visit to North Korea since spring.

Pompeo will be making his fourth trip to Pyongyang after an earlier visit in August was called off by Trump over what he called a lack of progress in denuclearization.

"Everyone recognises that we have a lot of work that is left to be done", she said.

But Mr Pompeo did not meet Mr Kim on his last visit in July, when the North Korean leader instead was photographed touring a potato farm. The invitation to return to Pyongyang to discuss North Korean denuclearization efforts was made during a meeting with North Korean Foreign Minister Ri Yong Ho amid United Nations sessions last week.

He is also scheduled to visit Japan (Saturday) and China (Monday) and meet his counterparts there.

Even though both sides seemed to be making progress following an announcement that North Korea may be willing to allow worldwide experts to observe the dismantlement of testing sites, Pyongyang and Washington also seemed to entrench their opposing positions during the UNGA.

US First Lady Melania Trump Lands in Kenya This Week
Mrs Trump's week-long trip to the continent was seen as helping to heal some of the divisions. Trump is on a five-day tour with planned stops in Malawi , Kenya and Egypt .

Refusing to say that talks with the DPRK has been stalled, she said "the secretary and the president said we're not going to set arbitrary deadlines in the interim".

The foreign minister told the UNGA that USA attempts to coerce North Korea into denuclearization will not work and that corresponding steps must be taken by both sides in order to advance progress between the two countries.

Trump paints rapprochement with North Korea as a signature foreign policy achievement, although critics question whether Pyongyang has taken any firm action. He said there's continuing worldwide support for economic sanctions to remain on North Korea in the meantime. At the time, Trump said there hadn't been enough progress on denuclearization.

Jacqueline R. McAllister, assistant professor of political science, noted that while a bilateral peace agreement could be signed between North and South Korea, an agreement that effectively addresses all issues related to the Korean War would be harder to reach. -North Korea relations, "especially if it were to go badly".

His ministry said Tuesday Cho's comments didn't mean that South Korea would accept North Korea as a nuclear state, suggesting Seoul's diplomatic efforts to rid the North of its nuclear program would continue.

Rep. Kim Sam-hwa of the center-right Bareunmirae Party said it was every Korean's wish to establish a peace regime on the peninsula through North Korea's irreversible denuclearization.

On Saturday, Trump lavished praise on Kim - considered by human rights groups to be one of the world's most repressive leaders - and said they had fallen "in love" after an exchange of letters.
