Democratic senators urge voters to focus Kavanaugh anger on election

Kavanaugh set to be confirmed concluding a fierce deeply bitter Supreme Court fight

"This is an important day for the United States Senate", McConnell said.

Protesters swarmed the streets of Washington, and rushed to the steps of the Supreme Court to bang loudly on its bronze doors around the time Kavanaugh was set to be sworn in inside.

"Judge Kavanaugh was entitled to an up-or-down vote".

Trump, throughout the day, insisted Kavanagh would not be tainted by the sexual assault allegations from Christine Blasey Ford and others that almost tanked his nomination, declaring he was "100 percent" certain his nominee was innocent. Key House Democrats have said they would investigate Kavanaugh. The photos released by the court show a calm, joyful scene: Kavanaugh standing beneath the portraits of chief justices, surrounded by his smiling daughters and wife, Ashley Kavanaugh, who stood by him after every accusation. The only way we can get people to do what we think they should do is because people respect us, " Justice Elena Kagan said.

But on Sunday, McConnell offered a revised version of his initial reasoning and refused to say he wouldn't confirm a potential Supreme Court nominee from President Donald Trump in 2020.

As senators cast their final votes on Kavanaugh's future, large protests erupted outside.

White House Down actor James Woods, a Republican known for sharing his right-wing views and staunch support of Donald Trump online, returned to Twitter after being locked out of his account by the social media company for refusing to delete a tweet it had flagged.

The confirmation means Trump has succeeded in having his two picks seated on the court - tilting it decidedly to the right in a major coup for the Republican leader less than halfway through his term.

His confirmation will allow Trump to hit the campaign trail ahead of the elections saying that he has kept his 2016 promise to mold a more conservative American judiciary.

The Beers4Brett hashtag was born last month, after Christine Blasey Ford testified that Kavanaugh had tried to rape her in the 1980s while drunk on beer.

After expressing support for Kavanaugh, he posted: "Now what Republicans must do is support those still marginalized by a history of oppression and neglect".

Senate leader Mitch McConnell said: "The court guards our right and the Senate guards the court". "These things always blow over", he told a news conference.

Controversial US Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh was approved by a majority of the Senate on Saturday afternoon after weeks of tension in Washington.

The Kavanaugh case before the Senate Judicial Committee seemed a throw-back to the 1991 confirmation hearing of Supreme Court Judge Clarence Thomas, when he faced sexual misconduct allegations - but only that he made romantic overtures to a subordinate and told her dirty jokes.

He said: "I stand before you today on the heels of a tremendous victory for our nation".

He said Saturday he thinks Republicans "are going to do incredibly well" in the elections after Kavanaugh's confirmation.

His confirmation vote was delayed by a week when the FBI investigation allegations he sexually assaulted women in high school and in college. He described the allegations as a "calculated and orchestrated political hit" masterminded by Democrats and left-wing groups.

Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.), who voted with the Republicans despite "reservations" about Kavanaugh's character and the accusations against him.

Inside the Senate chambers Saturday, protesters interrupted the final vote numerous times.

Democrats are hopeful of winning control of the House but the Senate is a long shot.
