Sources say Saudi journalist killed in Turkey

Dr. Muhammad bin Abdul Karim al-Issa Secretary General of the Muslim World League speaks at the Washington Institute for Near East Policy in May 2018

Two Turkish sources told Reuters Turkish authorities believe Khashoggi was deliberately killed inside the consulate, a view echoed by one of Erdogan's advisers, Yasin Aktay, who is also a friend of the Saudi journalist.

Turan Kislakci, a friend of Khashoggi and the head of the Turkish-Arab Media Association told the AP on Sunday that Turkish officials had told him that Khashoggi had been killed, and to make funeral preparations.

The spokesman for Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan's AK Party vowed that authorities would uncover the whereabouts of Khashoggi and the details of his disappearance, saying the case was highly sensitive for Turkey.

The Washington Post, for which Khashoggi wrote, cited unnamed sources to report that Turkish investigators believed a 15-member team "came from Saudi Arabia" to kill the man. The case would not go unsolved, Aktay said.

Mr Atkay's comments come amid speculation that Khashoggi's body was dismembered after his murder so it could be smuggled out of the consulate in parts.

Saudi Arabia has denied the accusations, saying it is "working to search for him". "Let us leave some time and a chance for both sides to see results".

The Washington Post contributor, 59, vanished after an appointment with Saudi officials on Tuesday.

"Everything is being inspected, especially entries and exits out of Istanbul, the airport", he said.

Khashoggi has retained ambiguous ties to Saudi authorities, having held advisory positions in Riyadh and Washington - including to Prince Turki al-Faisal, who ran Saudi Arabia's intelligence agency for more than 20 years.

The journalist's disappearance could exacerbate tensions between Turkey and Saudi Arabia, which are jockeying for influence in the region.

She closed her tour in Egypt by touring the pyramids and the Great Sphinx to highlight US -backed preservation efforts there. Trump said she didn't hear the president make the remarks and that none of her hosts during the trip brought up the topic.

In addition, Mr Khashoggi has criticised Saudi Arabia's role in Yemen, where Riyadh is supporting the government in its war with rebels backed by Iran. "We called a few other places, these are lower officials, but they said: 'We have evidence he was killed in a barbaric way, we will announce it tomorrow or the day after'".

Jamal Khashoggi, who contributed to the Washington Post, has lived in self-imposed exile in the USA for the a year ago.

The New York-based Committee to Protect Journalists demanded Riyadh give "a full and credible account" of what happened to Khashoggi inside the consulate.

Hatice Cengiz took to Twitter to say that she "did not believe he has been killed" and was waiting for official confirmation.

The former government adviser, who turns 60 on October 13, has lived in self-imposed exile in the United States since past year to avoid possible arrest.

The journalist said he had been banned from writing in the pan-Arab Al-Hayat newspaper, owned by Saudi prince Khaled bin Sultan al-Saud, over his defense of the Muslim Brotherhood which Riyadh has blacklisted as a terrorist organization.

"I have left my home, my family and my job, and I am raising my voice", he wrote in September.

According to Bloomberg, "Trump has heaped particular pressure on Saudi Arabia, the world's top exporter of crude oil, to do more to ease prices, by linking the American military presence in the Persian Gulf to the kingdom's oil-production policy". "I can speak when so many cannot".

Initially stunned into silence, or curbed by their political masters, officials had initially remained mute as questions about Khashoggi's disappearance mounted.
