Two astronauts make emergency landing after Russian rocket malfunctions during lift-off

American, Russian alive after Soyuz rocket headed to space station fails on launch

Two astronauts from the USA and Russia were safe after an emergency landing Thursday in the steppes of Kazakhstan following the failure of a Russian booster rocket carrying them to the International Space Station.

Their arms and legs flail while being shaken around at he moment the failure occurred.

Russian rockets have been the only means of bringing crew members to the International Space Station since the United States retired its Space Shuttle program in 2011, although NASA has announced plans for a test flight carrying two astronauts on a SpaceX commercial rocket next April.

They were to dock at the International Space Station six hours later, but the booster suffered engine failure minutes after the launch.

A subsequent tweet shows both astronauts boarding a plane after being recovered from the touchdown site. "The Soyuz capsule returned to Earth via a ballistic descent, which is a sharper angle of landing compared to normal".

Thursday's accident was the first serious launch problem experienced by a manned Soyuz space mission since 1983, when a crew narrowly escaped before an explosion on the launchpad. Luckily, the two astronauts on board - Alexey Ovchinin and Nick Hague - made it back to Earth safely, narrowly avoiding tragedy.

Russia's Interfax news agency had said the crew is in good condition and require no immediate medical help while NASA had earlier said help is on the way.

Google+ is officially shutting down
In 2011, it found that Google broke its own privacy policies when it introduced its Buzz social network - a precursor to Google +. In a statement, Google officials said there were other reasons for withholding public disclosure of the data exposure.

The landing location was in Kazakhstan, where the rocket took off, according to Russia's space agency Roscosmos. But it is also unlikely any Soyuz missions will fly for a while now until both NASA and Roscosmos, the Russian space agency, have got to the bottom of what went wrong today.

There are a few potential alternatives to leaving the ISS without a crew for the first time in almost 20 years, but given the risk-adverse nature of human spaceflight, it seems unlikely NASA or Roscosmos will want to tempt fate on any of them. If the booster fails again, at worst they will have only lost the hardware and no human life.

The use of ballistic descent has proved controversial in the past, raising questions over the safety of the Soyuz rocket.

This looked like another uneventful Soyuz launch for the first several minutes, but then the live feed showed increasingly violent shaking inside the cabin (about 2:20 in the video below). Hague and Ovchinin were set to be just the second two-man crew to travel to the space station in recent years.

Russian space officials have said they are investigating whether a hole that caused an oxygen leak on the ISS was drilled deliberately by astronauts.

Russian controllers told the space station astronauts that Hague and Ovchinin endured 6.7 times the force of gravity during their entry.

It comes weeks after a hole was discovered in the International Space Station amid talk from the Russian space authorities of deliberate sabotage.
