Hurricane Michael dumps heavy rainfall on western Cuba -NHC

NOAA: Hurricane Michael 2018 Projected Path, Spaghetti Models

"There are warnings for more than 300 miles of coastline". The hurricane is expected to strengthen and is forecast to be a Category 3 hurricane by the time of landfall.

By 5 p.m. Monday, Michael's top sustained winds were around 80 miles per hour (129 kph) as it headed north at 9 miles per hour (14.5 kph). It became a tropical storm a littler after noon on Sunday; less than 24 hours later, it was a hurricane.

Michael was lashing western Cuba on Monday with heavy rains and strong winds.

It's expected to make landfall somewhere in Florida's panhandle by Wednesday as a Category 3 on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Michael was located about 60 miles north-northwest of the western tip of Cuba and was moving north at 12 mph.

Tropical-storm force winds extend outward 230 miles from the eye of the storm.

ORLANDO, Fla. (CBSNews) - A tropical storm that formed rapidly off Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula has gained strength and could become a unsafe Category 2 hurricane with an expected midweek strike on the Gulf Coast over the Florida Panhandle, forecasters say. A hurricane watch is in effect for the coast of Alabama.

A tropical storm warning was in place for South Santee River, S.C.to Duck N.C. and Pamlico and Albemarle Sounds.

For us, the biggest impact from Hurricane Michael will be rain Wednesday afternoon through Thursday morning.

On the forecast track, the center of Michael will move across eastern North Carolina and southeastern Virginia this evening, and move into the western Atlantic Ocean Thursday night.

Death toll from hurricane Michael rises to 17
Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 35 miles from the center and tropical-storm-force winds were outward up to 185 miles. Following Hurricane Irma a year ago , 14 people died when a South Florida nursing home lost power and air conditioning .

A storm surge watch was in effect for Ocracoke Inlet, N.C.to Duck, N.C., Thursday, the NHC said.

Scott declared a state of emergency for 35 Florida counties from the Panhandle to Tampa Bay, activated hundreds of Florida National Guard members and waived tolls to encourage those near the coast to evacuate inland. "This storm will be life-threatening and extremely unsafe", Scott said Sunday after receiving a briefing at the State Emergency Operations Center. For now it looks like the greatest risk of wind damage, storm surge and freshwater flooding will come in places like Mexico Beach, Port Saint Joe, Indian Pass, Apalachicola, St. George Island, Carrabelle and around the "Big Bend" region of Florida.

"Everybody's got to get ready. Take care of them".

Those impacts include a potentially deadly 9-12 foot storm surge, powerful and destructive 115-125 miles per hour winds, tornadoes, coastal flooding, flash flooding and river flooding.

Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum , Florida's Democratic nominee for governor, filled sandbags with residents and urged the state capital's residents to finish emergency preparations quickly.

"We are running out of time", the Republican governor said on Twitter.

The Florida Highway Patrol is sending 100 state troopers to the Panhandle and Big Bend areas in preparation for the storm, he said.

Florida State University and Leon County schools canceled classes from Tuesday through Friday. "Residents and businesses in coastal Alabama must be vigilant and closely monitor the storm's path and be prepared for a major hurricane".

Michael gained new strength over warm tropical waters amid fears it would swiftly intensify into a major hurricane before striking Florida's northeast Gulf Coast, where frantic coastal dwellers are boarding up homes and seeking evacuation routes away from the risky storm heading their way. A warning for the coast of Mexico from Tulum to Cabo Catoche, was canceled late Monday. Forecasters say the hurricane will also bring tropical storm conditions to parts of the Yucatan Peninsula, and predict the storm will take a relatively direct northerly route toward the Florida Panhandle. "The possibility of hurricane-force winds will be highest along the immediate coast and closest to Michael's center around landfall".

Michael is the 13th named storm of the 2018 hurricane season, according to hurricane center spokesperson Dennis Feltgen.
