Trump says Saudis staged 'worst cover-up ever' on Khashoggi

Sky sources: Jamal Khashoggi's body parts found

President Donald Trump on Tuesday bashed the Saudi operation that ended with Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi killed "one of the worst cover-ups" in some of his strongest condemnation yet of what took place in the Saudi consulate in Istanbul, Turkey.

Crown Prince Muhammad Bin Salman, deputy premier and minister of defense, said on Wednesday the case of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi was "painful" and that the culprits will be brought to trial.

Hariri "will be staying in the kingdom for two more days, so I hope there are no rumours of his abduction", Prince Mohammed bin Salman said while addressing the Future Investment Initiative forum in Riyadh.

"Justice in the end will appear."
.

Turkey's President, Mr Recep Tayyip Erdogan, on Tuesday dismissed Saudi efforts to blame Mr Khashoggi's death on rogue operatives, calling the operation a planned, "savage killing", and demanded Riyadh punish those responsible, no matter how highly placed. Turkish officials suspect Khashoggi, a United States resident and critic of the crown prince, was killed and dismembered inside the consulate by Saudi agents.

Trump told The Wall Street Journal, "Well, the prince is running things over there more so at this stage".

The announcement of the call came just before Prince Mohammed, Bahrain's crown prince and Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri walked into the Riyadh summit.

He confirmed Khashoggi was killed in a vicious manner in the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul, and said the killing was pre-meditated at the direction of Saudi officials.

After Khashoggi disappeared, Saudi Arabia denied involvement for almost three weeks.

The vehicle, which had as many as four people in it, took off and crashed less than a mile from the shooting scene, Smith said. Police say Pretlow drove the vehicle from the scene, crashed a short distance away and fled along with other occupants.

The Turkish president did not mention the crown prince in his speech, though officials linked to the royal have been implicated in the killing.

The US president told the WSJ that he repeatedly questioned Prince Mohammed about Khashoggi's death "in a couple of different ways" and the prince told him he did not "know anything about it in terms of the initial planning".

Turkish sources have said that authorities have an audio recording purportedly documenting the killing.

State media also said the king and the crown prince had held a meeting in Riyadh with members of the Khashoggi family, including Khashoggi's son, Salah.

The men suspected of murdering the Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi will not be allowed to enter the UK, Theresa May has said.

This year's summit, however, has been overshadowed by the killing October 2 of Khashoggi.

Since Khashoggi's disappearance more than three weeks ago, Turkish and Saudi authorities have carried out multiple searches at the consulate and consul general's residence in Istanbul.

The French president informed the Saudi king of his "profound indignation" at the crime, and said France, in coordination with its partners, could take action against those responsible for the murder, the statement added.
