Apple chief pushes for US privacy law to stop "weaponizing" data

Apple chief targets ‘weaponization’ of customer data By European Interest

Another of his talking points involved artificial intelligence (AI) and how it plays a role in data collection, warning that its use for collecting huge amounts of information to create a profile on someone is just "laziness".

After the scandal Cambridge Analytica, a british firm that specializes in political influence, which has drawn the data of tens of millions of users of Facebook - Tim Cook had already shown favour to a regulatory "well-thought" on the personal data.

Mr Cook went on to commend the EU's GDPR, which places stricter rules on how personal data is handled by businesses and organisations.

The GDPR entered into force in May.

"Whether you're taking a photo, asking Siri a question or getting directions..."

"It is time for the rest of the world... to follow your lead", Cook said.

Apple CEO Tim Cook delivered an impassioned keynote speech on Wednesday at the 40International Conference of Data Protection and Privacy Commissioners in Brussels.

He also called for regulations and laws similar to the GDPR in the United States and the rest of the world. Companies that break the law risk harsh financial penalties.

Chinese spies eavesdrop on Trump's mobile phone calls, report says
They said the Chinese have determined a list of contacts with whom the president speaks most frequently. But using any cell phone poses some risk.

The chief executive of one of the biggest tech companies in the world has warned consumers that their personal information is being used against them "with military efficiency" by companies looking to turn a profit.

Stamos said that, while he agreed with most of what Cook had to say about Silicon Valley companies over-exploiting people's data-Cook named no names, but the targets were clearly Google (googl) and Facebook-the media did not take into account Apple's own privacy failings in China.

Facebook chief executive Mark Zuckerberg responded by defending his company's ad-based business model, arguing users were aware of a trade-off for free services. This is very unsettling and should make us all uncomfortable. "It should unsettle us".

On his own company's efforts, he said: "We at Apple believe that privacy is a fundamental human right but also recognise that not everyone sees it that way".

Unlike its major tech rivals such as Google, Facebook and Amazon who are heavily dependent on constantly data mining their users to target them with ads, customer data isn't almost as fundamental to Apple's business model. They should be allowed to access whatever data was collected and they should be assured that such data was held in a secure setup. Apple plans to expand it worldwide.

But Apple has been in the headlines recently for security issues of its own after a Bloomberg report that Chinese spies used a microchip to infiltrate the computer networks of nearly 30 US companies, including Apple and Inc.

Lastly, he stressed on the companies to enforce stronger data security measures. Cook later turned to the topic of artificial intelligence: "Artificial intelligence is one area I think a lot about", he said, "At its core this technology promises to learn from people individually to benefit us all".

The 28-nation European Union took on global leadership of the issue when it launched GDPR. Back in 2016, Apple went toe-to-toe with the Federal Bureau of Investigation after the latter wanted the company to unlock the iPhone of a terrorist who shot and killed people in the US.
