Brazils right-wing candidate poised to win presidential election

Bolstering his rebel image is his reputation for offensive statements and sometimes extreme views, including insulting women, gays and blacks.

Several hundred PT demonstrators protested Bolsonaro's victory on Sao Paulo's main Paulista Avenue before police dispersed them using tear gas. "But he's going to solve this, he's going to be firm, talking didn't get us anywhere so we need to respond with force".

Representatives of the Chinese government have traveled to Brasilia, capital of Brazil, in a bid to end tensions with presidential candidate Jair Bolsonaro, who is now leading polls.

Brazil's top electoral court said Bolsonaro won with just over 55 percent of the vote, compared with just under 45 percent for Haddad. Leftist Fernando Haddad of the Workers' Party had 44.5 percent.

The live broadcast of his speech was preceded by a prayer led by lawmaker, pastor and gospel singer Magno Malta, underscoring Bolsonaro's ties to evangelical churches that backed him for his pledge to defend Christian values, including his stance against abortion.

"You are as Brazilian as any of us", he said in a video posted on social media.

Voters in Sunday's runoff election apparently looked past warnings that the brash former army captain could erode democracy, and embraced a chance for radical change after years of turmoil.

"I'm surprised Brazilians would vote for hate, for guns", said Flavia Castelhanos, 31, after wiping away her tears, wearing a pin that said "Not him" - opponents' rallying cry against Bolsonaro. "There's a light at the end of the tunnel".

Among those crises: Brazil's economy shrank almost seven percent during its worst-ever recession, from 2015 to 2016; the multi-billion-dollar Petrobras scandal has left voters disgusted with the seemingly bottomless corruption of politicians and business executives; and there is widespread outrage over violent crime, in a country that registered a record 63,880 murders a year ago.

But many others fear that electing a populist provocateur notorious for praising Brazil's 1964-85 military regime and foreign autocrats including Donald Trump, Peru's Alberto Fujimori and Augusto Pinochet of Chile would send the country into the dark ages.

Benvenuti said results from Framingham would be transmitted electronically Sunday to officials in Brazil, and also printed and copied onto a portable computer hard drive to be mailed back to the country.

Brazil suffered a spate of partisan violence during the polarised campaign.

After the results were announced supporters flooded the streets outside Bolsonaro's home in Rio de Janeiro, letting off fireworks and waving Brazilian flags. In Brazil's commercial capital of Sao Paulo, Bolsonaro's win was greeted with fireworks and the honking of vehicle horns.

In his final hours of campaigning in Sao Paulo, Haddad accused the Bolsonaro camp of "sweetening" their candidate to make him appear what he is not.

Brazilians will go to the polls on October 28 to cast ballots in a presidential run-off that will pit a right-wing former paratrooper against a Worker's Party candidate.

After opinion polls in recent weeks had Mr Bolsonaro leading by as much as 18 percentage points, the race had tightened in recent days as several Brazilian heavyweights came out against Mr Bolsonaro, arguing that he was a direct risk to the country's democracy.

Pinera tweeted to Bolsonaro: "I am sure we will work with vision and strength toward a future that will favor integration and the welfare of our people". But the hugely divisive Workers' Party founder was barred from running because he is serving a 12-year prison sentence.

"All these people here are outraged, upset about corruption and crime, and we are with Bolsonaro".

Real Madrid boss Julen Lopetegui focused on El Clasico, not his future
Before kickoff, Barcelona fans chanted "Messi!" That will make this clasico the first to be played without either star since 2007. Spanish " Barcelona " has lost its leader Lionel Messi before important matches.
