North Korea swiftly expels USA citizen amid nuclear talks

APEC Summit 2018 in Port Moresby

The U.S. citizen was entering North Korea from China.

A statement from a South Korean news outlet yesterday (Nov. 18) revealed representatives from both sides of the peninsula discussed initiating bilateral academic exchange programs during a meeting last week.

It was all hand-shakes and smiles over the summer, when North Korea agreed to work towards denuclearization.

Multiple senior South Korean officials close to their president have confirmed to me that this wording is Kim's way of asking for a peace treaty ending the Korean War, which was halted with an armistice agreement in 1953.

The report said he claimed to be travelling for the United States secret service.

However, Pyongyang can not engage in business activities with Seoul or other countries, owing to a number of sanctions slapped against the country over its nuclear weapons programme.

North Korea released three US detainees in May ahead of a summit between its leader Kim Jong-un and US President Donald Trump in Singapore. KCNA identified the man as Bruce Byron Lowrance.

However, the announcement about the new weapon test marked Mr Kim's first high-profile visit to a military site since the June summit, and the first announcement of any weapons test this year.

The quick release of this American is a stark contrast to what happened to American student Otto Warmbier, who was detained and imprisoned in North Korea for 17 months and ultimately died from lack of oxygen and blood to the brain, a coroner said.

Meanwhile, North Korea seems to be eyeing economic development amid a thaw in its ties with China.

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte defends taking 'power naps' at summit
Duterte tagged RCEP, a free trade between Southeast Asian countries and key partners, as "a centerpiece of Asean's external economic relations".

The North Korean despot gave "field guidance" at the Taegwan Glass Factory in Northern Pyongan Province, Yonhap reported, citing North Korea's Korean Central News Agency.

North Korea could use the charm offensive to pressure the U.S.to agree to remove sanctions without denuclearization.

The North's decision matches its general push for engagement and diplomacy with the United States this year after a string of weapons tests in 2017, and a furious USA response, had some fearing war on the Korean Peninsula.

KCNA, meanwhile, reported that Kim had overseen the testing of a "newly developed ultramodern tactical weapon".

Earlier this year, Chinese ships were spotted making illegal shipments to North Korea, violating global sanctions.

It was Kim's first publicized visit to a weapons test site since the North test-fired an intercontinental ballistic missile toward Japan on November 28.

While many in Washington expect another showdown with North Korea, we have a clear, viable path forward to avoid a potential conflict. In fact, in a New Year's Day address this year Kim said he would "mass produce" nuclear warheads and missiles.

"Various facts clearly show that the U.S.is the unreliable country and main instigator of destroying the world peace".

The North said the test took place at the Academy of National Defence Science and that Kim couldn't suppress his "passionate joy" at its success.
