May confronts party rebels as European Union prepares for summit — BREXIT

Jacob Rees Mogg was one of the first MPs to submit his letter of no confidence in the PM

British prime minister Theresa May says she sees no alternative to the Brexit deal she presented earlier this week, amid reports that some of her senior ministers want her to renegotiate the draft agreement before meeting European Union leaders next weekend.

May runs a minority Conservative government and a rump of Brexiteers in her own party, the Northern Irish allies she relies upon for support, plus the opposition, have vowed to vote down the draft deal.

An extension period will be partly used to give negotiators more time to agree upon the UK's European Union exit deal, one that will get through parliament and stave off the threat of a no-deal Brexit.

"She is not and it's important to say that".

More than 20 lawmakers have said publicly that they have submitted a letter, but others are expected to have done so confidentially.

Clark told BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Monday that he backed an extension of the transition period at the UK's request, to support businesses in the changes they had to make to prepare for Brexit.

Mr Brady said he thought it was likely Mrs May would win any confidence vote, making her immune to another challenge for 12 months under the party's rules.

Mr Goldsmith is among at least 23 MPs who say they have submitted letters of no confidence in the prime minister.

In October, Theresa May confirmed she was ready to consider a delay of "a matter of months" in Britain's final departure from the European Union in order to avoid a hard border in Ireland.

Dutch Foreign Minister Stef Blok said Monday that "the withdrawal treaty is as good as it will get", while Luxembourg Foreign Minister Jean Asselborn also said there is "no better" Brexit deal for Britain.

'I do think there is a point at which, we probably should have done it before, where we just say "I'm sorry, this is the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, we can not accept those dictated terms"'.

Mrs May said negotiating teams were working "as we speak" and she meant to go to Brussels and meet European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker.

He also said the Republic is not contemplating a hard border if the draft withdrawal deal is rejected.

The EU nations and Britain are still negotiating the outline text of a future relationship which should be ready in the coming weeks.

May stressed that negotiations will continue over the content of the political declaration document on the future economic relationship between Britain and the EU.

CBI director general Carolyn Fairbairn said Brexit was "consuming" politics and businesses, and said politicians calling for a new deal were involved in "a high stakes game of risk where the outcome could be an accidental no deal".

Mr Russell said if the SNP was unable to stop the "unacceptable deal" then a second Scottish independence referendum should follow as there was no greater illustration for independence than Brexit. "Surely, surely we can go better than this".

Just hours after announcing on Wednesday that her senior ministers had collectively backed her divorce deal, May was thrust into her premiership's most perilous crisis when Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab resigned on Thursday to oppose the agreement.

"I still think a deal could be done", Raab told the BBC.

Following the summit, the final deal will be voted on in the House of Commons.

She reiterated that she is not willing to reopen discussions with Brussels over the withdrawal agreement, saying, "The core elements of that deal are already in place". "What's the question going to be?"

Earlier, Tory MP Simon Clarke told Sky News: I think that a new leader is required to bring about that change of policy.
