How arrest of Huawei Technologies CFO extends troubled history with US

China reacted furiously Thursday after a top executive and daughter of the founder of Chinese telecom giant Huawei were arrested in Canada following a USA extradition request, threatening to rattle a trade war truce with the United States.

Speaking to The Globe and Mail, Canada's Justice Department stated, "Wanzhou Meng was arrested in Vancouver on December 1". The ban was sought by Meng, who has a bail hearing Friday, he said.

McLeod said a publication ban had been imposed in the case and he could not provide further details.

When news broke on Thursday (Dec 6) that a top Huawei executive has been arrested in Canada, Ms Meng Wanzhou became one of the most talked-about persons in online chatter and social media chat groups.

China's embassy in Canada said it resolutely opposed the arrest and called for Meng's immediate release.

Huawei said it had little information about the charges and was "not aware of any wrongdoing by Ms Meng".

China's foreign ministry urged Canada and the U.S. to "clarify" the reason Ms Meng was detained. Meanwhile unconfirmed reports surfaced in April that the United States was investigating Huawei for possibly violating Iran export bans, a scenario that got fellow Chinese firm ZTE into significant trouble earlier this year.

Huawei said it complies with all laws and rules where it operates, including export controls and sanctions of the United Nations, the United States and European Union.

Meng is the deputy chairman of the company's board and the daughter of its founder, Ren Zhengfei, a former Chinese military engineer.

While another Chinese tech company, ZTE, fell foul of the USA sanction regime, "no arrest was made back then", Yip added, reflecting the seriousness of the Huawei saga. Its massive push into future mobile communications has raised hackles in the USA and become a focal point for American attempts to contain China's ascendance.

Jasper Lawler, head of research at London Capital Group, responded: "Traders have quickly moved out of riskier assets reflecting nerves that the arrest is likely to escalate tensions between the U.S. and China once again". A Canadian official said law enforcement took her into custody at the request of the USA, which is seeking her extradition for allegedly violating its sanctions on Iran.

Powell Comments Suggest Fewer Rate Hikes Next Year
There wasn't much of a reaction in the financial markets on Thursday to the minutes from the Fed's early November meeting. Then: Home sales have fallen to their slowest pace in two years, and low inventory in the housing market isn't helping.

Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou.

He said she was "sought for extradition by the United States" but did not give a reason for what prompted the arrest.

Over the years, she has been director of the global accounting department, chief financial officer of Huawei Hong Kong and president of the accounting management department at the company.

"While the Commerce Department focused its attention on ZTE, this news highlights that Huawei is also violating U.S. Law", Van Hollen said in a statement. US government officials and industry executives have long harbored suspicions that Huawei works primarily for Chinese government interests.

Meng in that Reuter's story was also referred to by her English name, Cathy Meng.

The US began an investigation in 2016 to ascertain whether or not Huawei has violated American sanctions against Iran.

In April, the sources told Reuters the U.S. Justice Department probe was being handled by the U.S. attorney's office in Brooklyn.

Washington had previously moved to constrain Huawei's business dealings in the U.S. The government cited concerns over Huawei's close ties to the Chinese government, arguing this made it a security risk.

Huawei, the biggest global supplier of network gear used by phone and internet companies, has been the target of deepening US security concerns.

The Meng arrest wasn't the only thing roiling the Asian markets today-Apple suppliers' shares have tumbled again after camera-lens supplier Largan Precision revealed a 28% fall in year-on-year monthly revenues.

U.S. Sen. Ben Sasse, a Republican member of the Senate armed services and banking committees, applauded Canada for the arrest.
