Over 350 detained as Paris braces for 'yellow vest' protest violence

Throwing cobblestones burning cars desecrating the Arc de Triomphe monument breaking store windows and looting images of the rioters shocked viewers across the globe

The movement's demands have also expanded to higher pensions, an increase in the minimum wage, a repeal of other taxes, the restoration of a wealth tax, a law fixing a maximum salary, and replacing Macron and the National Assembly with a "People's Assembly".

France's far left CGT movement has pledged support for the movement, which is also supported by the far-right leader Marine Le Pen.

Yet in a sign of the financial disconnect that infuriates numerous protesters, a few blocks from the famed boulevard, people were sitting in Paris cafes, drinking cocktails and chatting.

But the protests were far smaller than last week's demonstrations, as police sought to preempt any chaos by arresting protesters and confiscating risky objects before demonstrations began.

Armoured vehicles rolled through central Paris on Saturday as riot police clashed with "yellow vest" demonstrators, who set fire to barricades and hurled rocks in the latest demonstrations against president Emmanuel Macron. On Saturday, heavily armed French police used tear gas and stun grenades against the protesters.

Video showed protesters being searched by law enforcement for objects that could be used in battle. "Some ultra-violent people want to take part".

Riot police stand in line during copycat "yellow vest" demonstrations rocking neighbouring France, on December 8, 2018 in Brussels.

"We are not black bloc [black clad anarchists], we are ordinary people voicing our anger", said a protester who did not want to be identified. He said he hoped that Saturday was the last day of demonstrations, adding that it amounted to "a crisis of identity". He said he earns only 1,430 euros ($1,625) a month despite working 45 hours a week and has decided not to have children because doesn't feel he can earn enough to raise them. "The shoes are too big for him".

Amid the melee, President Emmanuel Macron remained invisible and silent, as he has for the four weeks of a movement that started as a protest against a gas tax hike and metamorphosed into a rebellion against high taxes and eroding living standards. But the president's reputation has continued to suffer during the countrywide rallies.

Huawei CFO facing US extradition appears in Canadian court
That information was passed on to federal prosecutors in the Eastern District of NY , the Journal report said. Her bond request was debated in a Canadian court Friday, pending her extradition to the US.

The government says some 136,000 people protested across the country. One sign read "No climate justice without fiscal and social justice". I or 2. But the USA was there for you, and always will be.

"These past three weeks have produced a monster that its creators no longer control", Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said Friday, vowing "zero tolerance" towards those aiming to wreak further destruction.

Groups in yellow vests also gathered near the iconic Bastille plaza and a few other spots around Paris. Cars have been torched and litter the streets. Thierry Stapts, the owner of a high-end motorcycle accessory shop that was looted last week, told Beardsley that Saturday could be worse. "Now is the time for discussion".

Major security measures in place ahead of fresh "yellow vest" protests which authorities fear could turn violent for a second weekend in a row.

The question is will he give the protesters what they want, which is something very simple: more money in their pockets.

Police deployed tear gas and stun grenades after getting cornered, with some agitators starting to throw plastic bottles.

On Friday, workers across Paris lugged pieces of plywood and hammered boards over the windows of shops and businesses - making the plush Champs-Elysees neighborhood appear like it was bracing for a hurricane.

The U.S. State Department has upgraded its travel advisory to a level 2 for France, warning travelers to exercise increased caution because of the protests.

Protesters told NPR that they largely support the global climate pact - they just don't think the poor should bear the costs.
