China Confirms Detention of Second Canadian

Huawei executive gets bail in case rattling China ties

It is unclear whether Spavor's disappearance is linked to his North Korea work, with the news following revelations earlier this week about the detention in China of former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig.

Trudeau addressed the Chinese capture of Michael Kovrig and Michael Spavor in a television interview Friday morning.

Global Affairs says in a statement our ambassador toChinaa met with Kovrig in Beijing and he and his family are receiving consular assistance.

Asked about it on Wednesday, Assistant Attorney-General John Demers said his department was not "a tool of trade".

Still, as someone who knew him said: "He was playing a unsafe game - he was working with North Korea and doing it from China".

The decision puts the breaks on a major Sino-Canadian initiative meant to deepen ties between the countries.

Canada has also been able to grab a bigger slice of China's wheat and soybean market as the Asian nation feuds with the U.S. Soybean shipments have almost doubled to 1 million tons between August and October while wheat exports rose 97 per cent to 397,200 tons, Canadian Grain Commission data show.

What those shared objectives are, he didn't specify.

Meng is chief financial officer of Chinese telecommunication giant Huawei Technologies, a company founded by her father that is one of the world's biggest manufacturers of mobile phones.

For a while now Canada has been under pressure to ban the company from participating in 5G network development after three members from the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance banned the company. But Trump issued a reprieve, perhaps partly because USA tech companies, major suppliers to ZTE, would also have been scorched.

"They want to send a signal that they don't want outsiders in China to deal with North Korea".

How Will The Leadership Challenge To British PM Theresa May Work?
Candidates for leadership must be nominated by two Conservative MPs and May would be barred from participating as a candidate. British Prime Minister Theresa May could be toppled if 158 of her 315 lawmakers vote against her.

Huawei has refuted the security concerns, saying that they're "unfounded", but that doesn't seem to be stopping the US from cutting Huawei's ties with as many of its partners as possible. "We don't always agree on every issue, but I think they play an important role in these climate discussions".

The Huawei chief financial officer's arrest at the Vancouver airport on December 1 touched off an worldwide uproar with the Chinese government claiming her human rights had been violated and demanding her immediate release.

Colleen McGuinness, who lives in the neighbourhood, said the reaction to the executive's arrival has been muted.

A US -based friend of his told Reuters that Spavor was involved in a few projects in North Korea, including sporting exchanges and trying to broker investment, though given United Nations sanctions that was a challenge. The Chinese embassy in Ottawa loudly protested Meng's arrest as a violation of her human rights.

Many details of the two cases remain unclear but the timing appears to be more than coincidental.

"We are working hard to ascertain his whereabouts and we continue to raise this with the Chinese government".

Earlier this week, U.S. President Donald Trump complicated Canada's position when he said he might intervene in the Huawei case if it would help clinch a trade agreement with China, upending U.S. efforts to separate the court proceeding from U.S.

But the Canadian prime minister has said little since news of this week's arrests became public.

Pompeo spoke at a press conference in Washington with his Canadian counterpart Chrystia Freeland, Canadian Minister of Defence Harjit Sajjan and US Secretary of Defence James Mattis.

She faces more than 30 years in jail if convicted, but was freed on C$10 million (S$10.3 million) bail Tuesday night pending the outcome of an extradition hearing, which could take months, or even years, if appeals are made in the case.
