Here Are Three Crazy Market Statistics on a Wild Day of Trading

US stocks attempt rebound

The Dow Jones Industrial Average slumped about 300 points early Thursday, a day after notching its biggest-ever point gain, as the market endures a bout of volatility to end what has been a topsy-turvy year.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average.DJI was up 196.31 points, or 0.90 percent, at 21,988.51 and the Nasdaq Composite.IXICwas up 98.42 points, or 1.59 percent, at 6,291.34.

The S&P 500 index fell 47 points, or 1.9 percent, to 2,420 as of 3:05 p.m.

Yet some analysts have argued that the stock market's weakness in December has been disproportionate to economic conditions at a time when unemployment is low and growth is still solid.

"You're watching the market wrestle with, 'Ok, are we within a couple percent off the bottom, or does the community think there's another 20 percent lower?'" said Billy Huzar, client investment strategist at J.P. Morgan Private Bank. It's looking for a reason to gain a little more confidence.

Big retailers were among the gainers.

But after rising more than 1 percent shortly after the start, the gains started fading.

Technology companies, health care stocks and banks drove much of the broad rally. -China trade war have led investors to fear the short-term trend of the market, with some anticipating a full-blown recession to hit the US economy.

Trump says US government shutdown to last until agreement on border wall
Mick Mulvaney said it's very possible that the closure continues until January 3 when the new Congress convenes. Senate negotiators are continuing talks behind the scenes with Democrats and Republicans.

A late report that a US government delegation will travel to Beijing in two weeks to hold trade talks gave stocks a final push higher. "The concerns are government shutdown, the economy, the President - what time is he going to tweet out about Federal Reserve", said Larry Benedict, founder of the Opportunistic Trader in Boca Raton, Florida. Facebook and Amazon shares were up more than 6 percent each.

European markets returned to trading following the Christmas and Boxing Day holidays to trade mixed.

ON THE BRINK: Wednesday's gains provide the S&P 500 some breathing room after finishing the shortened trading session Monday just shy of a 20-percent drop from its peak three months ago.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury is up to 2.76 percent.

The Dow is off 18.9 percent from its closing high, while the Nasdaq is already in bear market along with the Dow Jones Transport Average and the small-cap stocks. Sydney's S&P-ASX 200 gained 0.7 percent to 5,634.30 and benchmarks in New Zealand, Taiwan and Southeast Asia also rose.

Most Asian stock markets gained Friday while Japan edged down following Wall Street's rally at the end of a turbulent week.

The upbeat news from the retail sector shows that the consumer, which accounts for a huge chunk of the US economy, is healthy and optimistic enough to get out and spend-or stay at the keyboard and spend-despite the volatility that the stock market has seen in November and December. The Dow sank more than 2 percent, then recovered almost all of the day's losses, before again falling more than 2 percent.

The Nasdaq is down 323.90 points, or 4.7 percent. Benchmark Brent crude increased more than 8.5 percent to more than $54 per barrel. The euro strengthened to $1.1422 from $1.1351. Britain's FTSE 100 fell 1.5 percent. Tokyo's Nikkei 225 index was up less than 1 percent, while markets in Shanghai and Hong Kong were down less than half a percent.
