Manchester stabbings suspect detained under mental health laws

Man was arrested following the incident

Police in the English city of Manchester are quizzing a suspect and searching a house for clues about what they call the "terror-related" stabbings of three people at a train station on New Year's Eve.

Sam Clack, a BBC producer, was on a platform at Manchester Victoria waiting for a tram home when he witnessed the attack.

The victim, aged in his 30s, has been left fighting for his life after he was chased by a gang of men and women from a shop in Fulham, west London, before being stabbed and left for dead.

Police sources said the suspect refused to give officers his identity after being arrested for attempted murder.

The couple sustained "serious" injuries and are recovering in a hospital, police said. They were working throughout the night to piece together the details of what happened and to identify the man who was arrested, " he said.

The attack happened close to the entrance to Manchester Arena, where suicide bomber Salman Abedi killed 22 people in a terrorist attack on 22 May 2017.

Asst Chief Constable Sean O'Callaghan from British Transport Police said yesterday: "I am incredibly proud of the four officers who were immediately on scene last night, detaining a man who was wielding a knife".

"I believe that makes it an even more terrible attack for our city", he told reporters.

The city's New Year celebrations went ahead in Albert Square despite the incident, with a firework display taking place as planned, though increased security was brought in.

The anti-terrorist department of the British Police is investigating an attack in the western city of Manchester, whose perpetrator was arrested under the United Kingdom mental health law.

The suspect could be heard screaming "Long live the Caliphate" - a reference to Islamic State's enclave in the Middle East - and "Allahu Akbar", or "God is greatest", as he was led away to a police van.

Stratcom, based at Offutt Air Force Base in Nebraska, is one of ten unified command centers for USA military. A STRATCOM spokesman, speaking to NBC News, clarified that the images on the video showed non-nuclear bombs.

"It is important that the police investigation takes its course and any reports and articles avoid any assumptions, speculations and generalizations", the family statement said.

"While we don't yet know the full circumstances and are keeping an open mind, offers from the Counter Terrorism Policing North West are leading on the investigation".

"What it looked like was a guy in his 60s with a woman of similar age and another guy all dressed in black".

The suspect was detained by Manchester police on suspicion of attempted murder.

Clack told the British broadcaster he heard a "blood-curdling scream" and observed what "looked like a fight going on ... sort of scuffle".

"He came towards me", he added.

A witness has said the man with the knife shouted "Allah" during the incident but officials have not confirmed that.

'He came towards me.

Prime Minister Theresa May expressed concern for the victims and thanked emergency workers for their "courageous response".

'It was just fear, pure fear'.
