Australian Open 2019, Day 1: Match Points

Carolione Wozniacki

Sharapova, a victor at Melbourne in 2008, signalled her intent with a rare 6-0, 6-0 double bagel demolition of Britain's Harriet Dart.

The five-time grand slam victor duly crushed a crestfallen Dart 6-0, 6-0 in Melbourne to record her first "double bagel" win since the third round of the 2014 French Open against Paula Ormaechea.

The veteran five-time Grand Slam victor, who has struggled with injury since returning from a doping ban in 2017, showed glimpses of her old ruthless self to dispatch Dart in just 63 minutes.

Croatian pair Donna Vekic and Petra Martic have been seeded at a Grand Slam event for the first time, at 29 and 31 respectively.

The Swiss maestro, seeded three, has won the last two Australian Opens and is gunning for a record seventh crown and 21st Grand Slam title.

"I know, you were closing your eyes to be more focused on what I was saying", he added, continuing to make light of the embarrassing situation.

Sharapova will next play against Swede Rebecca Peterson, who beat Sorana Cirstea 6-4, 6-1.

It was Rafael Nadal's first match since his US Open retirement in the semifinals.

Ostapenko - the 2017 French Open champion - was expected to ease past Maria Sakkari on day one, but the Latvian came unstuck as she was beaten 6-1 3-6 6-2 by the Greek.

Two brilliant winners in the sixth game, which brought about an animated celebration from the Spaniard, gave him a break and a 4-2 lead but Duckworth got the break back in the ninth game.

Rafael Nadal didn't have any problems against one of the home players, James Duckworth. "I think that I was trying to finding my rhythm, especially in the first few games".

Nadal hasn't been bounced before the third round of a grand slam since the 2016 Australian Open.

The 24-year-old Van Uytvanck, ranked 52, troubled Wozniacki with some well-disguised drop shots in the beginning but did not have enough to register her maiden win at Melbourne Park in her fifth appearance in both singles and doubles.

Nadal looked in impressive form in his first competitive match since the US Open in September.

The Briton prevailed 6-0 4-6 7-6 (10-6) as she sent the former semi-finalist packing, Boulter recording the biggest win of her career to date.

The Spaniard, who will next meet the victor of Australian Matthew Ebden's contest with Jan-Lennard Struff of Germany, broke Duckworth for the sixth time and brought an end to the match with a brilliant backhand pass.

Fellow American Danielle Collins also enjoyed a first-round win, the world number 35 beating 14th seed Goerges 2-6 7-6 (7-5) 6-4.
