Huawei faces USA criminal investigation for stealing T-Mobile technology

Huawei under investigation for allegedly stealing trade secrets

Huawei said in a statement the company and T-Mobile settled their disputes in 2017 following a United States jury verdict that found "neither damage, unjust enrichment nor willful and malicious conduct by Huawei in T-Mobile's trade secret claim".

Citing people familiar with the matter, the Journal said that one area of investigation is the technology behind a device that T-Mobile U.S. Inc. used for testing smartphones.

An indictment could come soon, the Journal added.

A Huawei spokesman and a spokeswoman for the US attorney in the western district of Washington declined comment.

Van Hollen also offered a strong rebuke, saying that both Huawei and ZTE "have repeatedly violated US laws, represent a significant risk to American national security interests, and need to be held accountable". In a case brought forward in 2014, Huawei was charged with misappropriating robotic technology from one of T-Mobile's labs in Washington state.

T-Mobile had been seeking $500 million in damages but was awarded just $4.8 million when it won the case in May 2017.

According to the report, at the time that this alleged technology theft occurred, T-Mobile ordered Huawei handsets to sell to its customers.

Huawei under investigation for allegedly stealing trade secrets

Earlier this week, Huawei's billionaire founder Ren Zhengfei broke years of silence to dismiss USA accusations that the company helps spy for China's government.

The tensions come amid a backdrop of President Donald Trump's efforts to get more manufacturing on U.S. soil and slap hefty tariffs on Chinese goods for what he claims are unfair trade practices by Beijing. The two companies were specifically mentioned because they were anxious that Huawei and ZTE's network switches were used to monitor the United States.

"We're not going to comment on such reports in the press", Chase Skinner, a spokesman for Huawei, said late Wednesday.

Huawei holds an ever-growing share of the world's smartphone market and is a frontrunner in the race to develop next-generation wireless equipment, which critics say could enable Chinese spying efforts.

This led the impose a seven-year ban on the company buying from local suppliers. While the company contested the lawsuit, it later conceded that its employees had acted improperly.

American lawmakers on Wednesday introduced a bipartisan bill that would ban the export of USA components to Huawei and other Chinese telecom operators deemed to have violated American laws or sanctions.

"Huawei is effectively an intelligence-gathering arm of the Chinese Communist Party whose founder and CEO was an engineer for the People's Liberation Army", Cotton said in a statement. USA lawmakers have also banded together to ban chip sales to Huawei, ZTE, and other mainland companies to over sanctions violations.
