PM to try to break Brexit deadlock with European Union concessions

May had not come to terms with the scale of the defeat of her Brexit deal last week.

And she said that the Government would offer private and confidential briefings to backbench select committees to ensure MPs are kept up-to-date on the progress of talks without undermining the UK's position. Another vote would set a hard precedent for the country, would strengthen the hand of Irish and Scottish separatists and "damage social cohesion by undermining faith in our democracy", she said.

Poland's foreign minister Jacek Czaputowicz signalled a different approach from Warsaw, telling the Rzeczpospolita newspaper: "If Ireland asked the European Union to amend the agreement with the British on the backstop so that it would apply temporarily - let's say five years - the matter would be solved".

And the Labour chairman of the Commons Exiting the EU Committee, Hilary Benn - who has been pushing for a series of indicative votes on Brexit options, said: "I am sorry to say while her door may have been open, her mind has remained closed".

On the highly contested matter of the Irish backstop, Theresa May said that she will hold further discussions with Northern Ireland's DUP and others negotiators about their concerns.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel pledged Saturday to work until the "last day" to ensure an orderly Brexit, and signaled that responsibility for a successful withdrawal doesn't lie exclusively with the United Kingdom.

"You can not wish away no deal", she said.

Czaputowicz broke ranks to suggest a five-year limit to the backstop could be a way to "unblock negotiations".

"I don't know if it's feasible, if Ireland is ready to put forward such a proposal, but I have an impression that it might unblock the negotiations", he told the BBC.

Coveney said the idea would not work.

What the prime minister has offered, however, is simply to involve parliament and voices outside of parliament more closely in shaping the UK's position on the future relationship with the European Union, with the important caveat that it is "government's responsibility to negotiate" with the EU.

Inflation rate picks up to 2% in December
Prices rose more on a year-over-year basis in seven provinces in December compared with the previous month, the report said. A consensus of economists had expected inflation to register 1.7 per cent for December, according to Thomson Reuters Eikon.

May didn't mention any specific limit on the backstop in Parliament.

Under a plan that enters the test phase on Monday, EU nationals who want to stay must apply for settled status, and pay a charge of 65 pounds ($83) for adults and 32.50 pounds for children.

Mrs May announced the fee was dropped as she unveiled her Brexit Plan B to MPs - with just 67 days to go until the UK's exit.

"It's like last week's vote never happened".

May's task is gargantuan: Convince the European Union to reopen negotiations and then secure enough changes to gain the support of at least 115 lawmakers who previously voted against the deal.

That caution led Wollaston to withdraw her amendment to the prime minister's Brexit deal last week.

The Prime Minister is seeking to revive her deal with Brussels after it was overwhelmingly rejected by MPs last week in an historic defeat.

"This really does feel a bit like Groundhog Day".

Liam Fox, the International Trade Secretary and a leading Cabinet Brexiteer, said their antics amounted to an attempt to "steal" Brexit. And it is one we will keep. The weekend saw a flurry of headlines hinting at multiple possibilities for Brexit proceedings during today's parliamentary meet in the UK.

But rather than woo opposition MPs and risk splitting her own party, May seems to have calculated that it's better to try and win over the rebels in her Conservative Party - more than a third of Tories voted against Plan A - and the Democratic Unionist Party of Northern Ireland that props up her minority government.

Ever since Britain voted by 52-48 percent to leave the EU in a referendum in June 2016, London's political class has been debating how to leave the European project forged by France and Germany after the devastation of World War Two.

German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas pointed out on Monday: "We now know what they don't want in London".
