China Doesn't Want US Extraditing Huawei Exec in Canada

More than 100 China experts call for the release of two detained Canadians

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Hua Chunying on Tuesday said that both countries had abused the extradition agreement in Meng's case.

News that the USA will indeed meet a January 30 deadline to request Meng's extradition suggests the conflict over her case could stretch on for months, or even years, as Canadian courts consider the extradition case and process possible appeal.

The letter represented the latest effort to increase global pressure over the detentions, which came days after Canada arrested Huawei Technologies Co.

Meng's arrest soured relations between China and Canada, with Beijing detaining two Canadians and sentencing to death another who was previously found guilty of drug smuggling. She is now out on bail, fitted with an electronic ankle bracelet but permitted to live in her Vancouver home. She is now living in one of the two houses she owns in the Vancouver area; her next court date is set for February 6.

China detained Michael Kovrig and businessman Michael Spavor on accusations of endangering national security.

Earlier this month, Beijing also sentenced Canadian Robert Lloyd Schellenberg to death.

What happens next in the Huawei extradition case?

"We don't like that it is our citizens who are being punished", the Globe and Mail cited MacNaughton as saying.

China last week threatened repercussions if Ottawa blocked Huawei, a warning the Canadian government dismissed.

Chinas economy grew at slowest pace in 28 years in 2018
The US and China have been locked in an escalating trade spat since early 2018, raising import tariffs on each other's goods. The figures suggest that China may no longer be able to help shore up weakening global growth , as it has in the past.

They also follow a report by the Canadian newspaper Globe and Mail that the USA plans to formally request Meng's extradition to face charges that she committed fraud by misleading banks about Huawei's business dealings in Iran.

"We will continue to pursue the extradition of defendant Ms Meng Wanzhou, and will meet all deadlines set by the US/Canada Extradition Treaty", Marc Raimondi, a spokesman for the US Department of Justice, said in a statement. Business Insider was unable to contact the department due to the U.S. government shutdown.

The US and its allies are seeking to expel Chinese telecom giant Huawei and its advanced 5G equipment from their markets, researchers told Sputnik, suggesting that the recent punitive campaign could be unrelated to the ongoing trade talks between Washington and Beijing.

Canada's ministry of justice would have to decide whether to extradite Meng, and she can appeal any decision made.

China on Tuesday lashed out at a group of former diplomats and academics who signed an open letter to President Xi Jinping calling for the release of two Canadians detained on national security grounds.

Asked if China would retaliate against the United States if Meng is extradited, Hua said, "China will, of course, respond to US actions". "Everyone has to be held responsible for their own actions. Both the USA and Canada should be aware of the seriousness of the case and take steps to rectify the mistake", Hua said.

Huawei itself has taken a softer stance, with its founder Ren Zhengfei breaking years of silence last week to plead for his daughter's release.

That call has been echoed by Western allies including the United States and European Union.

"Certain progress can be achieved with regard to the Meng Wanzhou case, but the USA punitive campaign against the use of Huawei equipment in 5G projects will not be stopped, because the issue affects United States long-term interests!" the Chinese researcher suggested.
