Much Of Mountain West Region Doesn't Believe In Climate Change

In addition, 72 percent of respondents said climate change is caused entirely or mostly by humans.

That poll found similarly wide acceptance that climate change is happening, among seven in 10 Americans.

There may be some silver lining to having a president with such staunch views against the environment: namely that his blatantly anti-scientific views have coincided with a sharp rise in Americans believing that climate change is real, manmade and urgently concerning.

Overall, 73% of Americans accept that global warming is happening, outnumbering those who don't by five to one.

The data was gathered from 1,114 American adults in a web-based survey by the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication.

Despite most of the country's political elite being rabid climate change deniers America seems to be waking up to the realities facing our planet. "The fact that most Americans can see the effects of climate change with their own eyes is one of the reasons why more and more Americans are seeing the disinformation campaign for what it is, an effort to deceive us". These numbers haven't changed much over the past few years, which means that most of the people who've recently been convinced that climate change is real aren't willing to do anything much about it.

Wind Chill Advisory In Effect for Saturday Morning
As cold as today's deep arctic chill? Skies are clear this morning, but a few clouds may build back into the state this midday. Precipitation will begin moving in Tuesday night ahead of this system and again, we're presented with a tricky forecast.

This survey focused its questions on respondents' emotions toward global warming in addition to simple knowledge of the issue. Those were among the key findings of Climate Change in the American Mind: December 2018 (PDF). 69% said they are very or moderately interested and 53% said they were very or moderately disgusted.

New Mexico State University's Climate Change Education Seminar Series continues in 2019 with a seventh talk, this time addressing how to best navigate polarization in the public debate about climate change. Fifty-four percent of Americans said they haven't yet felt the effects of global warming, but that number is at its lowest level in a decade.

"The thing that is most encouraging in these polls is that they show the public has now become aware that climate change is here and now", said Bob Inglis, a former GOP congressman who leads RepublicEN, a group trying to persuade Republicans to support climate action. Just 14 percent of Americans think it is too late to do anything about it. Nearly half, 44 percent, would support a carbon tax to reduce new emissions of greenhouse gases.

Majorities would support a carbon tax if the money went to restore forests, wetlands, and other parts of the environment; fund research and development into renewable energy sources; or expand public transportation.

The advancing ranks of climate change believers still don't include many Republicans. We ask that any comments by climate-change denialists be flagged for moderation.

Among Australia's major insurers, IAG and Suncorp have release climate change action plans, while QBE has indicated it will rethink its underwriting strategy on fossil fuels.
