The watershed moment was President Donald Trump's stunning remark in August 2017 from the steps of his New Jersey golf club that a "military option" was on the table to deal with the Venezuelan crisis.

There's an ongoing political crisis in Venezuela, where lots of people have been involved in violent protests.

Police fired tear gas to disperse protesters in several areas, after a rally on Tuesday evening left a reported four people dead.

The United States and major South American nations also recognised Guaido as interim leader on Wednesday. Here is Newsround's guide to what is happening.

But the Russian embassy in Washington suggested America's intervention in Venezuela was a tactic to distract from legislative chaos at home, where a partial government shutdown is entering its 35th day and leaving some 800,000 federal employees either furloughed or working without pay.

The economy in Venezuela isn't doing well.

"They say they don't recognize Nicolas. OK".

The public health system has collapsed, which means many can not get the medicine they need. Millions of people have fled across the border to neighbouring countries while the Maduro regime cracks down on dissent and opposition. Maduro, who met President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in December, was the legitimate president, said Peskov.

He said: "Our challenge is to secure free elections, and we want them as soon as possible".

As two declared presidents vie for power in Venezuela, a United Nations human rights official says at least 20 people have died in protest-related violence this week in the Latin American country, sparking her concern that the situation there "may rapidly spiral out of control".

Pouille powerless to find any solution to dominant Djokovic
Djokovic says his competition with Nadal reaches such a pitch that he can remember matches in which he wished both could have been declared winners.

"Today, I am officially recognising the president of the Venezuelan National Assembly, Juan Guaido, as the interim President of Venezuela".

Soraya Venitez, a Montreal artist and activist originally from Venezuela, participated in a protest Wednesday against the Maduro government.

The three holdouts included Mexico, which has maintained a principle of non-intervention under leftist President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, as well as Guyana and Saint Lucia.

Lots of countries have been getting involved in the dispute.

"Since Trump is a very polarizing figure, Canada gives what's happening more credibility because of its own common sense, its more stable policies and the consistency of Canada's role as a supporter of democratic processes", McGill University Professor Philip Oxhorn told CTV's Your Morning on Friday.

"We must learn the lessons of the past and not be in the business of regime change or supporting coups - as we have in Chile, Guatemala, Brazil and the Dominican Republic", Sanders said in a statement, while also condemning Venezuela's crackdown on protesters.

So who is Juan Guaido, why does Mr Trump believe he's Venezuela's legitimate leader, and does anyone else agree with him?

Even Orhan Osmanoglu, the grandson of Ottoman Sultan Abdulhamid II, was among Maduro's supporters.

But there were no signs that security forces were widely heeding Guaido's call to go easy on demonstrators.

The military has remained loyal to Maduro through years of economic crises and anti-government actions, but rogue military elements have launched periodic uprisings and presidential assassination attempts nonetheless.
