Disastrous FaceTime bug lets you spy on person you're calling

Apple demonstrates Group Facetime at WWDC 2018

It appears that Apple inadvertently introduced a FaceTime bug with the release of iOS 12.1 late previous year.

The FaceTime glitch was first noticed by trade publication 9to5Mac, which wrote that the bug, which was "spreading virally over social media", lets you "immediately hear the audio coming from their phone".

All you need to do is start a video call with a fellow iOS user, swipe up while it's dialling and hit "Add person".

A viral Tweet showed off how to spy on users using Facetime, with people able to listen via the microphone and watch via the camera before anyone has picked up. The company told Reuters that it was aware of the problem and would release a software update "later this week".

Apple's disabling of Group FaceTime on Monday is a temporary fix ahead of the software update.

NY governor Andrew Cuomo issued a statement warning people about the bug and urging people to disable the app until Apple fixes the issue.

A mother and son from Arizona tried to warn Apple about the eavesdropping FaceTime bug over a week ago.

Ross: 'I Don't Understand Why' Federal Workers Are Using Food Banks
Ross replied that several of the government's employee credit unions were creating proposals to assist furloughed workers. He warned that federal workers may be ensnared by notorious payday loan operations , which charge sky-high interest rates.

"You can FaceTime any iOS device running 12.1 and listen in remotely-WITHOUT THE OTHER PERSON ANSWERING THE CALL".

The bug, demonstrated through videos online, comes as an embarrassment for a company that is trying to distinguish itself by stressing its commitment to users' privacy.

Call someone from your contacts using FaceTime. Before the person picks up, the app allows you to add your own phone number to the call.

He said: "The FaceTime bug is an egregious breach of privacy that puts New Yorkers at risk". This essentially turned any device with Group FaceTime - include iPhones, iPads and Macs - into a listening device.

That said, this FaceTime incident is a serious blow to Apple's carefully constructed image of the champion of privacy. Meanwhile, in an iOS security overview document from previous year, the company stated, "Only Apple can provide this comprehensive approach to security, because we create products with integrated hardware, software, and services".

On an iPhone or iPad, head to Settings FaceTime and toggle FaceTime off.
