May will seek to reopen Brexit divorce deal

Mr Coveney assured that the backstop is not

It's far from certain the amendment will win support from a majority in the House of Commons when it comes to a vote later Wednesday.

If the the Prime Minister fails again, then the chamber wants her to seek permission from European Union leaders to delay Brexit beyond the scheduled departure date of March 29.

May, who will close Tuesday's debate, now hopes her Tory party will say clearly what it wants to change in the deal she's struck with the EU.

"People like me want to avoid a no-deal outcome, a crashing out on March 29".

"The backstop is part of the Withdrawal Agreement, and the Withdrawal Agreement is not open for renegotiation". "If things go towards more declarations, assurances or statements - we can do that".

This was one of the seven amendments to the Brexit bill being voted on in parliament.

"The overriding theme in all the no-deal planning is civil disobedience and the fear that it will lead to death in the event of food and medical shortages", a source told the newspaper.

Sterling recently hit a 2-1/2 month highs of $1.3218 on hopes that a no-deal Brexit would be avoided, and stood around $1.3137 just before voting on the series of amendments began at 1900 GMT.

Sir Graham said his amendment was drawn up after meetings with ministers including Mrs May.

Her plan would see MPs seize control of Parliament timetabling from the government, allowing a a vote on legislation that would force May to delay Brexit if a deal with the European Union can not be agreed.

Snow remaining likely for Tuesday morning
Temperatures will from the mid-teens on Tuesday with possible record cold highs for Wednesday . Models continue to be consistent showing rain falling initially and changing over to all snow.

"We are therefore asking you to work with your colleagues in Parliament urgently to find a solution that avoids the shock of a no-deal Brexit on 29 March and removes these risks for United Kingdom consumers".

Opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn said he would meet May to "find a sensible Brexit solution that works for the whole country", listing changes that Labour wanted to see.

May, who will meet with her cabinet on Tuesday, also faces major hurdles when her latest gambit is put to a test in a vote expected in the Commons later in the day.

Pro-Brexit MPs have accused the speaker - who publicly declared that he voted for Remain in the seismic 2016 referendum on Britain's European Union membership - of using his traditionally impartial positon to try to scupper Brexit. They call for the contentious Irish backstop to expire by December 2021 or be removed from the Brexit deal altogether.

Later on Tuesday, backbench MPs will try to seize control of Brexit as they vote on a set of amendments to alter - or even stop - the UK's exit from the bloc after PM Theresa May failed to get her deal through parliament.

The pound then sunk even further by almost 0.7% as a number of other amendments were voted on - particularly MPs backing a call for the Brexit deal to be passed if backstop removed.

The EU's deputy chief negotiator Sabine Weyand said on Monday the bloc was "open to alternative arrangements" on the Irish border but that Brady's proposal did not spell out what they were.

Labour MP Hilary Benn has one amendment explicitly demanding indicative votes on Brexit options, including Norway Plus, a Second referendum, a "managed" no-deal, or a Labour Brexit.

The small Northern Irish party which props up May's minority government but opposes her deal, said the contents of May's speech to lawmakers on Tuesday will determine whether it will support the amendment. "So it may be about semantics of what "reopening" means", an European Union diplomat involved in Brexit talks said.

But the current votes will not mark the end of Britain's turmoil over Brexit.
