Lindsey Graham Wants FBI Briefing On Roger Stone Raid

Roger Stone former adviser to Donald Trump's presidential campaign center arrives at federal court in Washington D.C. on Jan. 29 2019

Senator Graham asked for the briefing in a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray (copy below via Scribd).

On Friday, more than a dozen armed agents clad in tactical gear swarmed Mr. Stone's home.

Stone was indicted under seal on January 24 in the special counsel's investigation.

In the indictment filed Friday, prosecutors alleged that Stone communicated in the summer of 2016 with senior Trump campaign officials about the damaging internal DNC documents then in WikiLeaks's possession.

Rep. Doug Collins, the top Republican on the House Judiciary Committee, wrote Wray on Wednesday as well, asking for information on the raid and suggesting that "such a show of force may also unnecessarily place agents' lives at risk by potentially heightening the risk factor for everybody involved".

Stone was indicted last Thursday on seven charges of lying to investigators, obstruction of justice and witness tampering. He is also not accused of making false statements when he told the House Intelligence Committee on September 26, 2017 that he has had no contact with WikiLeaks or its founder, Julian Assange. The AP reports that Senator Graham "wants a briefing from the Federal Bureau of Investigation on the tactics it used last week" when it took Stone into custody.

Duke Professor's Email to Chinese Students Causes Uproar
The controversy erupted after screenshots of Dr Neely's email to biostatistics students began circulating online over the weekend. Some students posted Neely's email on social media, causing it to go viral and be picked up by Chinese media outlets.

In an arrest warrant filed under seal on January 24, prosecutors expressed concern that Stone could destroy evidence and that he posed a flight risk.

The special counsel investigation has long focused on Stone as well as other former associates of the president. He also said that he does not have a valid passport and could not flee the U.S.

In the letter, Graham said he was concerned about the way the arrest was conducted, particularly "the number of agents involved, the tactics employed, the timing of the arrest" and whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation tipped off members of the media.

Fordham Law Professor Jed Shugerman said that while this revelation may not be grounds for charges in the Mueller investigation, it could be grounds for state charges, which would be unaffected if President Trump were to grant a pardon to Stone.

As for the "stolen goods" conjecture, there is no evidence Stone asked WikiLeaks to give him stolen goods and, because in this case the stolen materials were published, First Amendment concerns are at stake, which means that that the DOJ may be hesitant to press charges.
