Putin says Russia suspending missile treaty after US move

However, Mr Putin said Moscow will only deploy intermediate-range nuclear missiles if Washington does so.

Brokered by United States president Ronald Reagan with last Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, the treaty ended a superpower buildup of warheads that had frightened Europeans.

It would reconsider its withdrawal if Russian Federation came into compliance with the agreement, which bans both nations from stationing short- and intermediate-range land-based missiles in Europe.

Putin said during a televised meeting with foreign and defence ministers Sergei Lavrov and Sergei Shoigu that Russian Federation would no longer initiate talks with the U.S. on disarmament.

"We will respond quid pro quo", Putin said. "The US' unilateral withdrawal from the Treaty may have a whole number of implications, China will closely monitor the developments", the diplomat noted.

Following the USA notice of withdrawal from the treaty in six months, Putin said in televised remarks Saturday that Russian Federation will do the same. The US accused Russian Federation of violating the treaty for the first time in July 2014.

Putin has previously threatened to develop nuclear missiles banned under the INF treaty if it is scrapped.

Putin emphasized that such new weapons won't be deployed unless the US does so.

Ben Affleck's Batman Days Are Officially Over
Still titled The Batman , the movie will be directed and written by Matt Reeves and will be produced by Reeves and Dylan Clark. Details of The Batman are thin on the ground though reports in the U.S. suggest Reeves wants a younger actor to play Wayne.

Trump said he would like to "get everybody in a big and attractive room and do a new treaty", but in the meantime, the United States "can't be put at a disadvantage".

"We will wait until our partners have matured enough to conduct an equal, meaningful dialogue with us on this important topic", the president said.

A treaty that has helped keep the world safe from nuclear war appears to be falling apart.

The Russian leader a year ago unveiled an array of new nuclear weapons, including the Avangard and the Poseidon, saying that they can't be intercepted.

Sergey Lavrov was speaking during a meeting with President Putin.

The Pentagon's new strategy unveiled last month calls for a new array of space-based sensors and other high-tech systems to more quickly detect and shoot down incoming missiles. He said the military must reconfigure the existing defense budget to find money for the new weapons.

The Russian minister said that another centrepiece nuclear arms pact, the New Start, which is set to expire in 2021, is also in trouble.
