The Swedish far-right party, the Sweden Democrats, is no longer calling for the country to leave the European Union and it is not the only one.

Varadkar, whose government has stressed the importance of maintaining an open border between Ireland and Northern Ireland after Brexit, thanked Tusk.

She is due in Brussels on Thursday and Mr Tusk said she would be welcomed, but wants her to come armed with a "realistic suggestion" to reaching an agreement on the backstop and protecting peace in Northern Ireland.

Mr Verhofstadt said on Wednesday, reports the Associated Press: "The withdrawal agreement is fair and can not be replaced".

It provoked plenty of responses from pro-leave identities, including arch-Brexiteer Nigel Farage, who labelled Mr Tusk a bully. "Sounds more like heaven to me".

Some Brexiteers have predicted that the EU's seemingly stubborn stance is only a negotiating tactic and Brussels will eventually succumb to United Kingdom pressure and offer a better deal with an altered or removed backstop.

As the deadlock with Brussels deepened dramatically, the European council chief lashed out at Leave campaigners who had no idea how to sever ties "safely".

Reaction, as they say, was swift and furious from the Brexiteers.

"The prime minister has come here empty-handed, with the same old rhetoric, with no plan, no credibility, frankly no honor", said Mary Lou McDonald, president of the Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein.

And while Jean-Claude Juncker ruled out the idea of the United Kingdom having the right to pull out of the backstop if it were ever needed, he didn't say anything about the other idea doing the rounds - a time limit.

"You are not going to convince me that anything Donald Tusk says could further harden the position of the Boris Johnsons' or the Rees-Moggs' of this world", she said.
