Prime Minister Scott Morrison slams Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan 'coffins' threat

Recep Tayyip Erdogan

The Turkish officials conveyed President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's "deep sorrow" over the recent bloody attacks.

The Greek foreign ministry warned the Turkish leader to tone down his campaign rhetoric after he accused the West of plotting against his country.

Erdogan spoke of the terrorist attack in New Zealand which left 50 people dead, saying it was as part of a wider attack on Turkey and threatened to send people back in "coffins" if they attempt to turn Istanbul into Constantinople.

He said Turkey was wrong to have abolished the death penalty 15 years ago, and added that New Zealand should make legal arrangements so that the Christchurch gunman could face capital punishment. New Zealand, with the messages they are giving from there.

"What business did you have here?"

At the rally, ahead of the March 31 local elections, Erdogan claimed that the manifesto by the attacker Brenton Tarrant "targeted Turkey and me", according to Bloomberg.

"We had no issues with you, why did you come all the way over here?" he told a rally in the country's north.

Many dead in New Zealand shooting at two mosques during Friday prayers
Reports suggest that many of those affected are part of New Zealand's migrant and refugee communities. He also mentions Finsbury Park terrorist Darren Osborne as well as London mayor Sadiq Khan.

Stating that it was "saddening" to see the rise of far-right sentiment as well as racism and Islamophobia, they said that it was clear that these extremist approaches encourage terror-prone individuals.

It follows news that during Turkish election rallies held hours after the attacks took place, Mr Erdogan showed footage of the deadly massacres to supporters of his Islam-rooted Justice and Development Party (AK Party) - a move that has since been condemned by Christchurch for possibly endangering New Zealanders travelling overseas.

The New Zealand police commissioner, Mike Bush, told reporters in Christchurch earlier that he was aware of comments made by Erdoğan blaming New Zealand for the anti-Muslim attack and was "alert" to the risk of reprisals.

The video prompted widespread condemnation.

Turkey's main opposition party has also criticized Erdogan for showing the clip "for the sake of (winning) three or five votes" at the elections.

Foreign Minister Winston Peters told a press conference on Monday that the Turkish president's decision to screen footage from the Christchurch shooting could endanger New Zealanders. Facebook said it removed 1.5 million versions of the video in the first 24 hours after the attack.

Peters announced on Tuesday that he would be traveling to Turkey this week at Istanbul's request to attend a special meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation.
