Varadkar says rolling Brexit bad for EU | Ireland

Speaker John Bercow had the casting vote after the tie

The United Kingdom was supposed to leave the European Union on April 12, which was already a delay from the original departure date of March 29. She is now in talks with the opposition Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn to find a way out of the deadlock, but it is not clear whether they can find a solution in the next few days.

In an attempt to convince Labour to sign up to a deal, No 10 is offering to enshrine in law a plan that would hand parliament a say in future trade talks with the EU.

Obscure parliamentary procedures have been resurrected, providing daily drama from the House of Commons but making the future of Britain's biggest change in generations no clearer.

But if Britain is still a member when the bloc holds elections to the European Parliament on May 23, it will need to take part in the poll and send another batch of MEPs to Strasbourg.

The UK government has already started preparing to hold the European elections, instructing local authorities and the electoral commission to prepare polling stations and ballots.

But there seems to be little appetite in Brussels for an extension that could create another cliff edge in three months.

Tusk is understood to prefer a year-long extension, which could be shortened if and when the United Kingdom ratifies a withdrawal deal, the BBC reported. As in May's proposal, the extension could be halted early if Britain ratifies the withdrawal agreement.

Chair of the European Research Group, Jacob Rees-Mogg has tweeted that should the United Kingdom remain as a member of the EU for a longer period then it should be "as hard as possible". "I would call it a "flextension"," one official said.

But the talks so far have failed to clinch a breakthrough. This week, the Commons has been invaded by semi-naked protesters, squeaked through legislation by a single vote cast by an MP on early release from prison and been shut down by a flood.

But for those in the room, the delicate state of the Conservative Party may mean they feel they are negotiating with one hand tied behind their back. But more talks were planned between staff of May and Corbyn.

Instead, Mauricio Pochettino's men remain without a Premier League win since February 10. The win moves Chelsea to within one point of fourth-placed Manchester United.

French President Emmanuel Macron has thus far seemed cagey about giving Britain more time, saying the bloc can not be held hostage by Britain's political deadlock over Brexit.

"Our approach to these discussions with Labour is that we have no red lines", he told reporters at a meeting of European finance ministers in Bucharest.

Paul Ziemiak, secretary general of Chancellor Angela Merkel's Christian Democrats, told Reuters Television he leaned "towards taking our time to sort things out".

There also were fears about a chaotic Brexit on April 12.

Meanwhile, 17 percent admitted that they would not vote in them anyway.

MPs have rejected her agreement finalised with European leaders last November three times, delaying Britain's original March 29 exit date and throwing the process into chaos. It is a prospect May and many in her Conservative party are anxious to avoid, fearing a backlash from voters.

One of Labour's key demands has been a customs union with the EU after Brexit, something it would want to be written into the document.

The online petition calling on Parliament to revoke Article 50 has now attained more than six million signatures: as any petition on the parliamentary petitions website which gains more than 100,000 signatures earns the right to be debated by MPs, the Article 50 petition was discussed on Monday in Parliament's Westminster Hall; despite the government's response, issued last week, stating that it had no plans to revoke Article 50.

May long insisted that her plan - quitting all European Union institutions, with a 21-month standstill period to negotiate a bespoke free trade deal - was the only viable one.

Prime Minister Theresa May wrote to European Council president Donald Tusk today to request an extension of Article 50 until 30 June.
