Sudan's military ousts President Omar al-Bashir following protests

Sudan Military to Make

Omar al-Bashir was ousted from power by the military following months of civilian protests against his 30-year rule.

As reports of a military coup in Sudan flood in, it appears that this is not the first time that the Sudanese Armed Forces have attempted to topple al-Bashir.

Sudan President Omar al-Bashir is believed to have stepped down amid nationwide protests contesting his leadership, Al Arabiya TV reports.

A Reuters witness says soldiers raided the headquarters of the Islamic movement led by Sudan's Omar al-Bashir in the capital Khartoum on Thursday. It called on protesters to maintain a sit-in outside the defence ministry that started on Saturday, a source with the group said.

Ibn Auf further announced the suspension of Sudan's 2005 constitution, along with the dissolution of the Sudanese presidency, parliament, and council of ministers. Some shouted, "They removed a thief and brought in a thief!"

A military council will take control of the country for two years, after which elections would be held, the minister added.

A photo of the 22-year-old architecture student dressed in white, out on the streets on Monday, has come to symbolise Sudan's protest movement.

He was indicted by the Hague-based ICC in 2009 on war crimes charges over a long-running conflict in Darfur, but went on to win re-election twice in polls boycotted by opposition groups. And the US targeted his government repeatedly with sanctions and airstrikes for his support of Islamic militants.

As pressure mounted on al-Bashir to leave power, almost 50 people were killed in a series of protests that erupted in December, according to media reports.

Judd Devermont, a former senior CIA Africa analyst now with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, pointed to the example in Algeria, where longtime President Abdelaziz Bouteflika was ousted this month.

The Taliban has balked at negotiating with the Afghans, which the group views as an American puppet organization. The insurgents dismiss the Afghan government as a US puppet. "The area is cordoned off by the coalition forces".

State TV announced that the military would make an "important statement" imminently and the nation should "wait for it".

Despite a lack of concrete information about what was happening for much of the morning, tens of thousands of Sudanese marched through the centre of Khartoum in jubilation, dancing and chanting anti-Bashir slogans.

"I, the defense minister, the head of the Supreme Security Committee, announce the uprooting of this regime and the seizing of its head, after detaining him in a safe place", he said.

Alaa Salah, nicknamed "Kandaka" or "Nubian queen" after she was filmed leading chants against the government, accused the authorities of "hoodwinking" the people. "Hope in equality has been lost".

Demonstrators called for a civilian government and said they would not accept an administration led by military and security figures, or by Bashir's aides.

Mariam al-Mahdi, a leading member of the opposition Umma, called the military's takeover "a unsafe move". The government responded by cracking down on protestors, shutting the internet and social media outlets, cutting electricity and water services, and dispersing protestors using tear gas.

A three-month state of emergency has also been imposed, as protesters demand immediate set up of a democratic transition.

"Those who destroyed the country and killed the people are seeking to steal every drop of blood and sweat that the Sudanese people poured in their revolution that shook the throne of tyranny", the statement read.
